AN APPRECIATION: "E.J.B" writes-Thomas Miller, the outstanding personality of the co-operative movement in this district the past 15 years, is no more. Taking up the chief executive position the Newcastle and Suburban Society when its members were riven with internal dissension, with his counsel, advice, and example, he gradually welded the warring factions into a harmonious body, and started the society on the way of being the largest and most prosperous co-operative trading society in the State. Retiring from the Railway Department, he devoted the whole of his time to the co-operative movement, believing that the solution of many of the problems that trouble the industrial world to-day would be found in some sane form of co-operation. He was the, soul of honour, his word was his bond. Those who ware closely associated with him often marvelled at his varied knowledge and retentive memory. Biblical and Shakespearean quotations embellished his speeches and arguments. Always courteous in his manner, and even-tempered, with a thorough grasp of the rules of debate, he was an ideal chairman. Though no man is Indispensable in any movement, there are some whose places it will be hard to fill. Such a one is Thomas Miller.
