Biography

I changed Christopher Miller, Sr.'s estimated death date to 1759 given his will was probated on 1/1/1760.

A copy of his will held in Middlesex Co., VA can be found at link below (page 281 of 561 pages); Christopher Miller, Sr. could sign his name to his 1755 will so he would write:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9P6-L86G?cat=382907

Christopher's will bond can be found at same link above (page 282 of 561 pages):

Executors of Christopher Miller, Sr.’s will bond: Ann [Dabney] Miller; John Miller; Anderson Miller; & Robert Elliott, Gent. It appears Ann [Dabney] Miller could not write; however her sons John Miller and Anderson Miller could sign their names. Christopher Miller, Jr. may not have been included on the bond since he would only have been about 18 (based on my estimated birth year for him). Other male children of Christopher Miller, Sr.: Dabney; Cornelius; David; Nathaniel; and Isham Miller would have been 10 or less in 1760.

I scanned the pages after 281 show below up to page 424 of 561 (to about 1765 I think) and did not see Christopher Miller, Sr.’s estate inventory (but could have missed it since difficult to quickly scan these old documents). There is an index of what appears to be estate inventories not far after page 282 which does show an estate inventory being listed for Christopher Miller. Would be interesting to find this inventory to see what is included in his estate.

https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I106721&tree=Tree1

In the link above is a profile on the Christopher Miller that married a Michal (unknown) Miller; which would refer to the Christopher Miller of this profile; however there are several errors on this non-WikiTree profile of Christopher Miller (est. birth years and death date are incorrect and he likely would not have died in Northumberland Co., VA given he is documented in Middlesex Co. (where his will was recorded) and King and Queen Co., VA). However there is a document on this non-wikiTree profile on a Christopher Miller who died around 1734 (year his estate was administered in Northumberland Co., VA by a Joseph Miller on 5/15/1734)

There were only 9 Miller's appearing on the 1704 Rent Rolls, of which 6 were in Norfolk Co., VA (2 Miller windows; a John Miller; a JOSEPH Miller; a Thomas Miller; and a William Miller). The remaining 3 Miller's in 1704 listed were all John Miller's in Middlesex Co.; Gloucester Co. (Kingston Parish); and Essex Co. So maybe the JOSEPH Miller that administered the Christopher Miller's estate in 1734 was the same JOSEPH Miller as on the 1704 Norfolk Co. Rent Roles. There was a Christopher Miller born November, 1700 Northumberland Co., VA to a Thomas Miller and Thomas the father was dead by 3/12/1714 and Christopher went into training as a carpenter. He may have been the Christopher Miller that died in Northumberland Co., VA around 1734.

I am not sure if the Christopher Miller born about 1779 in Norfolk County, Virginia who was "Lumber getting" in 1850 as noted in the 1850 Warwick Co., VA Census could be related to the Joseph Miller that administered the estate of a Christopher Miller in 1734 in Northumberland Co. (be was born 45 years after 1734; but was noted as born in Norfolk Co., VA).

I do know that the John Miller that died in 1742 was the father of the Christopher Miller that died about 1758 given they are both noted on the King & Queen Co. document as father and son. However I am just not certain who the John Miller that died in 1742 father was and if he (and maybe his son Christopher) were born in Scotland or maybe England.

Name

Christopher MILLER

Birth

Another birth date that I've seen in others research is: abt 1710

So it appears it appears Christopher Miller-45047, Sr. (check his estimated birth year again; since his daugher Michael (Miller) Batchelder was born 9/19/1734; it seems Christopher would have been born about 1710 if Michael was his 1st child) lived in King & Queen County in 1746. However Christopher Miller’s will written on 2/18/1755 (estate inventory not until 1/1/1760) notes he was “of the County of Middlesex”. So maybe he moved from Middlesex Co. to King & Queen Co. sometime between 4/1/1746 and 2/18/1755.

1746 King & Queen Co. court case noting Christopher Miller [Sr.] was “of King and Queen County”:

4/1/1746 (link above): "Ordered That Sarah Miller pay Christopher Miller of King and Queen County for one days attendance in her suit against Henry Baden and for coming and returning fourteen miles. p. 69. Dated April 1st 1746."

https://www.jstor.org/stable/1921004?read-now=1&seq=6#page_scan_tab_contents From link above (1797; page 127 maybe; in King & Queen County, Virginia District Court: "Davies v. Miller and Others" case:

"JOHN MILLER, dec'd, will dated 21 February, 1742. Issue: daughter, Mary, married John Berry; son, Christopher Miller, dec'd, will, had issue among other sons, Christopher Miller, dec'd, will dated 2 June, 1792."

Would be great if I could find more details on the court case above which references 3 generations of my Miller line; found basic details of the cases:

https://www.legalgenealogist.com/2012/05/22/jefferson-to-grattan-va-court-cases/ "Davies v. Miller et al., 1 Call 127 (1797). John Miller of King & Queen County made a will 21 February 1742 leaving a life estate in 100 acres of land to his daughter Mary Berry, wife of John Berry, and on her death the land was to pass to his son Christopher Miller. John Miller also had a grandson Christopher, eldest son of John’s eldest son. The grandson sued to get the land, but died before the case was heard. The grandson’s will purported to give the land to one party, the son’s will gave it to someone else, and the case came down to who had possession when. How do you feel about this case if you’re a Miller descendant from King & Queen County, where virtually all of the records were destroyed in fires in 1828 and 1865?"

Christopher was born about 1726. He was the son of John Miller and Sara Hadley. He passed away about 1760.

Christopher may have been born in Middlesex County, Virginia; however there is an issue with birth years in the Christ Church Parish records between his birth year and his father's if these are NOT transcription errors, Christopher Miller or his father may have been from another branch of my Miller family that landed in Middlesex County, Virginia with my other Miller's already living there. That would indicate he was born in Scotland. A 3rd possibility is his birth was in York County, in the Colony of Virginia. Research needed.

Research Notes

Ancestry.com; Waldrop Family Tree notes an Ann Anderson who is noted as born about 1730 in Middlesex County as married to a Christopher Miller. However they note her father & mother are unknown. This does somewhat confirm my thoughts that Christopher did marry an Ann Anderson first.

An Edward Bristow and Alfred Boos. witnessed the will of Christopher Miller on 2/18/1755/1/1/1760.

I changed the birth date of Christopher Miller to Abt. 1712 given that his son (John Miller) likely was born 2/14/1736 (ten years earlier than I thought possible due to an incorrect assumed birth year of Christopher. This assumes that Christopher Miller was born years prior to his baptism date of 2/2/1726 (Christ Church Parish record transcription: "Christopher Son of John & Sarah Miller born Jan'y ye 27. baptized Feb'y ye 1726"; no record of Christopher Miller birth found). I made this change base on the information from "Jean" Agnew's records below: "Jean" Agnew's records in The Library of Virginia note: "Michael dau. Chris. & Ann Miller b. Sept. 19, 1734". For some reason I did not see the birth of Michael in the transcriptions of the Christ Church Parish records I reviewed last year.

The reason I did not find this birth record is I search under "MILLER" and it was misspelled in the transcription as "Millar": "Mical Daughter of Christopher & Ann Millar, Born Sept. 19 1734"

NOTE: THE FACT THE "MILLAR" SPELLING WAS NOTED ABOVE IS AN INDICATION THAT MY GREAT....GREAT GRANDFATHER, CHRISTOPHER MILLER POSSIBLY WAS BORN IN SCOTLAND WHERE MILLER IS OFTEN SPELLED "MILLAR".

So this means that the birth year of the next child of Christopher and Ann Miller (John Miller) was likely correct as 1736 which means that maybe Christopher's (the father) birth year may have been years prior to his baptism.

3/11/1681 Edinburgh, Scotland: A possible father (also named Christopher Miller) of the Christopher Miller of this profile gives testimony with a William Gouger and Robert Sangster , "who lived in the shire of Stirling, and suffered at the Grass-market of Edinburgh, March 11, 1681." on page 246 of the book in the link above (under book section titled, "The Scottish Martyrs". It is not clear from the statement however that the three men were actually killed for being Presbyterians as noted in many entries in this section of the book. I am thinking it is possible the Christopher Miller of this profile immigrated from Scotland and was not born in Middlesex Co., VA (however likely would have been related to the Miller's of Middlesex Co., VA).

I now think there was a Christopher Miller born on 1/27/1726 to a John Miller and Sara Hadley as noted in the Christ Church Parish records. However this is NOT the Christopher Miller of this WikiTree profile. I believe the Christopher Miller born 1/27/1726 father (John Miller) was NOT the same John Miller that married Mical Christopher that also had a son named Christopher Miller that was born about 30 years prior to 1726. I assume Christopher was born after this sister (Anne (Miller) Barbee b- 1693) likely not in Middlesex Co., VA given neither of their births are noted in the Christ Church Parish register.

NOTE: I SINCE DETERMINED THAT THE CHRISTOPHER MILLER BORN 1/27/1726/MAYBE 1727; WAS CHRISTOPHER MILLER THE SON JOHN MILLER, JR. JOHN MILLER, JR. WAS CHRISTOPHER MILLER, SR.'S (B- CIRCA 1710) BROTHER.

Also if Christopher's father (John Miller) was born in 1655; his children noted to-date would not have been born until John was about 35 years old. This could indicate that John may have had an earlier wife and earlier children with her.

Other ? Christopher Miller's Noted

The link above will take you to a 728 page book written by a likely Miller relative of mine in 1907 (he was born in the mid 1800's) on Miller's in Albemarle County, Virginia; many of which landed in Kentucky. They appear to descend from my Miller branch that left Scotland in the late 1600's for Northern Ireland and many immigrated to various east coast states in America in the early/mid 1700's. Some of these Albemarle Co., VA/Kentucky Miller's associated with Anderson's and Dabney's in these areas (surnames of my ancestor, Christopher Miller's two different spouses).

NOTE: I am leading a bit more that my ancestor, Christopher Miller may have come from Scotland (or Northern Ireland branch of my Miller's) to Middlesex County, Virginia. He highly likely would have been related to my earlier Middlesex Co., VA Miller's but his father was not born in Middlesex Co., VA. It is also possible his father was one of my York County, Virginia area relatives given all the record losses in the York Co., VA area making this Miller branch difficult to trace. I did find a record of a Christopher Miller getting lumber in Warwick County who was noted to have been born in Norfolk Co. in the 1700's based on his age noted in the Warwick Co. record.

As noted above (but will repeat here since this is an indication that the Christopher Miller of this profile may have been born in Scotland: "Jean" Agnew's records in The Library of Virginia note: "Michael dau. Chris. & Ann Miller b. Sept. 19, 1734". For some reason I did not see the birth of Michael in the transcriptions of the Christ Church Parish records I reviewed last year.

The reason I did not find this birth record is I searched under "MILLER" and it was spelled in the transcription as "Millar": "Mical Daughter of Christopher & Ann Millar, Born Sept. 19 1734"

NOTE: THE FACT THE "MILLAR" SPELLING WAS NOTED ABOVE IS AN INDICATION THAT MY GREAT....GREAT GRANDFATHER, CHRISTOPHER MILLER POSSIBLY WAS BORN IN SCOTLAND WHERE MILLER IS OFTEN SPELLED "MILLAR".

November, 1700 Northumberland Co., VA: A Christopher Miller was born to a Thomas Miller and Thomas the father was dead by 3/12/1714 and Christopher went into training as a carpenter (I assume this was not the Christopher of this profile even if he would be about the correct age):

COULD THE ABOVE CHRISTOPHER MILLER BE MY GREAT...GREAT GRANDFATHER????

SOURCE for items below: "Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812" published in 1989:

1/3/1748: "(p.445) Administration of Estate of Christopher Miller to John Miller, Jr."

The statement above does not currently fit my family tree surrounding the Christopher Miller's since Christopher Miller, Jr. (the Christopher on this profile's son) does not fit the Christopher's noted below from 8/4/1752 to April, 1757 since Christopher Miller would have been a child to his late teens during these events; NOR could they refer to the Christopher Miller of his profiles if he died in 1748 when the administration of his Estate was noted above. STILL SOME CONFUSION AROUND MY CHRISTOPHER MILLER's (maybe there is at least one other Christopher Miller in the family around this time period).

8/4/1752: "(p.254) Inventory of Henry Baden by William Hill, William Montague and Christopher Miller."

NOTE: The above William Hill doing the inventory of Henry Baden's estate is likely the brother (William Hill, Jr. Hill-29743 b- Abt. 1705) of this Christopher Miller's brother's wife (Elizabeth Hill).

2/26/1754: Court ended case against a William Dudley: Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812: "Christopher Miller against William Dudley over the sale of a horse. Note of John Falconer to James Mills, merchant. Wit: Henry Wiseheart, George Rankins and John Mills."

7/5/1754: Christopher Miller has a court judgement against a James Serosby: Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812: "Christopher Miller against James Serosby."

7/29/1754: Christopher Miller is noted to have purchased 100? acres of land: "Stanton Dudley... 192 acres being 100 acres and 92 acres. Chaincarriers: Alfred Boss and John Murray. Surveyor: William Parry. Land divided equally on 6 May 1754 between William Dudley and Stanton Dudley. ADJOINS KEMP'S WAREHOUSE, Christopher Miller, Col. Armistead Churchill, Bonner Mackrory, William Morgan, Robert Elliott and Bland's Road. William Dudley has sold 100 of his acres to Christopher Miller and it adjoins Beaumont."

NOTE: The Robert Elliott noted also obtaining land adjoining Christopher Miller's at Kemp's Tobacco Warehouse was likely the Robert Elliott who witnessed Christopher Miller's father's 1742 will; and the Robert Elliott that witnessed Christopher Miller's 1744 will. In a 1755 court case (Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, etc. book; page 12): William Jordan and Richard Barnes (merchants of Richmond County, VA-Lunenburg Parish) against Robert Elliott; Robert Elliott is also noted as a MERCHANT.

NOTE: ABOVE GIVES SOME INDICATION THAT THIS CHRISTOPHER MILLER WAS INVOLVED WITH THE TRADE OF TOBACCO: from: http://www.ssentinel.com/index.php/community/article/james_mills_had_a_good_eye_for_colonial_real_estate

"In 1770, Mills purchased 550 acres, which is half of the property associated with Middlesex’s other Tobacco Inspection Warehouse and wharf— “Kemps down on the Piankatank River.” Kemp is the family name for this 1,100-acre plantation started in 1656. Kemps was at that time the second most significant economic spot in Middlesex County, but in recent times was almost lost and forgotten. Kemps was an important site since before 1730 when the two Tobacco Inspection Warehouses were authorized by the Virginia Colony for Middlesex. At that time it was probably a busy village with workers homes, a farm, mill, and all the tobacco-marketing structures."

4/1/1755: Court ended case with a John Wharton: Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812: "Account of Christopher Miller, Sr. with John Wharton lists wages for 1754-1755."

April, 1757: Christopher Miller was on a jury (this likely is Christopher Miller, Jr.'s father just prior to his father's death: "Jury: William Roane, Mayo Brooks, James Gibson, Rowling Sutton, Lewis Montague (foreman), John Taylor, CHRISTOPHER MILLER, David Barrick, John Owen, John Southern, John Jackson, and James Wortham. Wit: John Davis of Essex CO, John McNeals, George Barbee, Armistead Churchill and John Churchill."

1810 New Kent Co., VA Census: A Christopher Miller who would have been born about 1770 (could be the Christopher Miller noted in 1850 Warwick Co. Census below; and maybe the grandson of the Christopher Miller on this WIkiTree profile) was listed on the 1810 New Kent County, Virginia census (could have been the a son of a Christopher Miller). He was listed as having 2 children under the age of 10; 2 children 16 to 26; and spouse who was about his same age (26 to 45 in 1810). No other free persons were living with the family; and 4 slaves were listed. The current James City Co. possible Miller property on south side of York River (opposite Miller Landing Rd. on north side of the river) would have been in New Kent Co. up until 1776. This Christopher Miller on the 1810 New Kent Co. Census would have been born between 1765 and 1784 (Norfolk Co. born Christopher Miller was born Abt. 1779 so within this range).

1850 Warwick Co., VA Census: I am not sure if the Christopher Miller born about 1779 in Norfolk County, Virginia who was "Lumber getting" in 1850 as noted in the 1850 Warwick Co., VA Census is related to the Christopher Miller on this WikiTree profile. See my 3/17/18 EM. May have been the Miller with saw mill that “Miller Rd” in Warwick Co. was named after. Not sure if related to my Miller’s given he was born in Norfolk Co. There were NO Christopher Miller’s born in Isle of Wight Co. (only Middlesex Co.).

i still do not have a clean explaination as to why the Christ Church parish transcript notes a Christopher Miller born to a John and Sara Miller on 1/27/1726. this is the only Christopher Miller noted in the Christ Church parish records during this time frame. however the Christopher Miller that married Ann Anderson and later Ann Dabney would have only been about ten years old when he married Ann Anderson if he was born in 1726. also they named their 1st born daughter Michael which was Christopher's father's 1st wife's name (Michael Christopher) who died around 1717. it would be logical also that Christopher was named after his mother's family name (Christopher or Christoperson maybe). so it does not seem possible that his mother was Sara Hadley.

i assume it is possible that there were two Christopher Miller's in Middlesex County, va born between 1700 and 1726. The one not born in 1726 (say 1712 or prior), could have been born say in Scotland, England, etc. and immigrated to Middlesex co., virginia in say in the 1730's. There are christopher millers born in Scotland and England between 1700 and 1715, but it is not known if any immigrated to Virginia.

Update - august, 2018: i looked into this issue in more detail on a possible error in the christ church parish register transcription of this Christopher Miller's birth date as 1/27/1726.

Christopher's father (John Miller) notes several of his children in his 1742 Middlesex co., Va will. One child John's notes is his daughter Mary who he identifies as Mary Berry. The only Mary Miller that was the correct age (based on christ church transcripts) to be married to John Berry - (marriage documented as on 11/30/1732); was the Mary Miller born to John and his 2nd wife Jane Hill on 9/26/1715. The other children of John mentioned in his 1742 will were all children of John and Michael Christopher. No children of the John Miller married to the Sara Hadley are mentioned in John Miller's 1742 will. In the past i thought this was because none of the children John and Sara had survived to 1742 when John Miller died. however i cannot find any documents that confirm two (Anne and Mary miller) of the seven documented children of John and Sara died prior to 1742. There is documentation that the other five children had died prior to 1742. This Mary Miller was born 3/19/1725 so she would only have been 8 years old when the Mary Miller married the John Berry; so this is not Mary (Miller) Berry noted in the 1742 John Miller will. Also it is unlikely John would have named two children (of different mothers), Mary. So it is unlikely the John Miller that died in 1742 was the one that married Sara Hadley and had a son named Christopher Miller on 1/27/1726. So my only conclusion is that a son named Christopher Miller was born to John miller and his 1st wife (Michall Christopher) after their last documented child (Michael Christopher) was born on 10/31/1707 and prior to John marring his 2nd wife (Jane Hill) on 3/28/1714. It is possible John Miller traveled back to Scotland between 1707 and 1714 and he and likely Michall Christopher had a son named Christopher Miller sometime during these 7 years.

So i am estimating Christopher Miller was born prior to 1710 which would be about the correct year based on the birth years of Christopher's children.

it is possible that Christopher Miller was born to John Miller & Mical christopher in the 1680's to early 1690's maybe in scotland prior to the family arriving in virginia by 1695 when their 1st child (John Miller) was documented born in Middlesex Co., Va (christ church). the 1st child mentioned in christopher's 1759 will was ann (miller) barbee who may also been born in scotland prior to the family comming to virginia.

Christopher Miller's will from FamilySearch.org; Note: My cousin Woodrow Warriner Miller transcribed Christopher's will also in 1985 from the original document and this transcription by Woodrow also notes a Ford and a "Bood" (could this be the "Brooks" noted below?) apparently witnessing Christopher's will:

10/21/1800: per Anne Virginia "Jean" Agnew's (b- 1872) papers in Library of Virginia:

Capt. Thomas Healy (b- 2/12/1746 Middlesex Co., VA; D- 1813 in same county - see his profile on Ancestry.com) who purchased 365 acres in Middlesex Co., VA from Mary Ann (Perkins) Miller (John Miller's b- 1736 wife) who had remarried Jesse Miens (maybe Meins - Netherlands ancestry?). John Miller had given this land to Mary Ann for her life and then it was to be divided between his sons Barbee Miller and Dabney Miller. Barbee & Dabney sold their rights for this land to Thomas Healy (see below) for 286 pounds and 4 shillings on 10/21/1800.

Anne Virginia “Jean” Agnew’s papers in The Library of Virginia: “Middlesex D. B. 12 p. 92 - Oct. 21, 1800. Barbee Miller and Anne, his wf., of Nottoway Co., and Dabney Miller and Mary, his wf., of Amelia Co., deed to Thos. Healy of Middlesex Co., for 286 pounds and 4 shillings paid to them by the said Thos. Healy, a certain tract of land in Middlesex Co. containing 365 A. which tract of land by the last will of Christopher Miller dcsd. late of Middlesex, bearing date of Feb. 18, 1755, was given to his three eldest sons - John, Anderson, and Christopher Miller, to be equally divided between them. Anderson and Christopher Miller sold each of their rights in the above mentioned tract of land to their brother, John Miller. The said John Miller by his last will, proved and recorded in New Kent Co., about the year 1782, gave the said tract to his widow, Patty Miller, now Patty Miens, during her life, and after her death, to be equally divided between his two sons - Barbee Miller and Dabney Miller.

Middlesex D. B. 11 p. 43 - Patty Miens and her husband, Jesse Miens sold their right in the land of John Miller to This. Healy.”

So Mary Ann (Perkins) Miller's nickname must have been “Patty”. I could not find a Jesse Miens b- Abt. 1750 (or Meins) on Ancestry.com or WikiTree.com.

Based on Scottish naming patterns for children; John Miller & Mary Barbee likely had a first son named Christopher (father's father); as well as a son named John (father); and possibility a third child unnamed born about 1764. These birth records could have been lost with only their last 4 children's births being recorded at Christ Church Parish.
