Biography

Thomas was born about 1714. He was the son of Edward Miller. He passed away after 1765.

Other surnames mentioned in the suit: Carrell; Carrol; Clayton; and Hodges (several enslaved persons by 1st name only)

Old documents so difficult to read but a few key passages:

Page 3 of 9: Frances Dews; Rebecca Dews; William Dews; & Thomas Dews infants under the age of 21 by Edward Dews their father…. [something] friend, John Clayton [his will noted as in 1756]…. John Clayton had a considerable estate in slaves.

John Clayton’s will states: I give unto my daughter Rebecca & her husband Thomas Miller to ? labor of said negro woman….Thomas Miller took possession of the said slave until the time of his death.

Rebecca had 3 children with Thomas Miller:

Edward Miller Sarah Miller Elizabeth Miller

Rebecca (Clayton) Miller then married Edward Dews and she had 4 additional children (ones mentioned at top of page 3 of 9 above) all under 21 as of 11/8/1779:

Frances Dews Rebecca Dews William Dews Thomas Dews

In 1782: Rebecca (Clayton) Miller/Dews had “lately also departed this life”
