Biography

  • A Report in Forbes Advocate dated 24th July, 1923 reads:

FATAL COLLISION CAR AND MAILTRAIN. A terrible accident happened on Saturday evening at a railway level crossing near Parkes, a mother and her son being killed and two other persons being seriously injured. The victims were: — Mrs. Miller, of Manildra, killed. Wilfred Miller, 28, killed. Claude Miller, 32, seriously injured. Michael Maguire, seriously injured. The Millers and Mr. Maguire, who is a solicitor, had driven into Parkes by motor car to transact some business, and were on their way home. It was just getting dark, at about 29 minutes past five, when they came to a. level crossing about two miles outside Parkes. From the meagre details available it is believed that Wilfred Miller, who was driving, failed to notice the approach of the mail train bound for Sydney, and he drove across just as the train thundered by. With a terrible crash the engine struck the car and dashed it to pieces. When the train pulled up and the horrified passengers rushed to the scene they found that the occupants of the car had been terribly injured. Mrs. Miller was dead, having apparently been killed instantly. The others were still living, and they were taken with all possible speed to the Parkes Hospital. Wilfred Miller, however, was so seriously injured that he died two hours afterwards. His brother Claude was badly injured about the head, and Mr. Maguire received very serious chest injuries. Eric Miller had a miraculous escape. Beyond suffering from shock and bruises, he was found to be uninjured. The car was an enclosed one, and it Is believed that those inside had no warning of the approach of the train. The accident happened just as the light was falling, which may have accounted for the driver not noticing the approach of the train. The crossing is an open one with only the usual notices to "Look out for Trains" on each side. The fireman on the locomotive barely had time to notice the car before, the collision. It was too late to notify the driver and he jerked the whistle cord and applied the. brakes, but the time was too short and the engine swept on to the car. Mr, Wilfred Miller, who was killed, lived with his mother at Manildra, while his brother, Mr. Claude Miller, is of Yamma Station, Forbes. Mr. M. J. Maguire is well-known locally, and at one time was in partnership as a solicitor with Mr John Robinson here. He was in Forbes as recently as the last Quarter Sessions. LATER. (By wire from Parkes this morning) The condition of. Claude Miller has slightly improved but that of Mr. Maguire is unchanged. An inquiry into the accident was opened yesterday, but only formal evidence was taken. The inquiry has been adjourned to August 9.
