The link above is John Miller's birth recorded; born 10/6/1744 St. James Northam Parish in Goochland Co., VA to "Will. Miller & Mary Heath".

NOTE: Another researcher (Betty Tartas if I recall correctly) feels John Miller's wife was Mary Cocke; which could be the case given John & Mary Miller did named a son, John Cocke Miller.

Mary Jones appears to be John Miller's possible spouse

Below from my 10/15/23 EM: Possible Thomas Watson that witnessed John Miller's Feb., 1795 P. E. Co., VA will

Thomas Watson's father, John Watson-8291 (b-1745; about same time as John Miller who died in Feb., 1795) may have been the John Watson who also witnessed John Miller's 1795 will (John Watson-8291 WikiTree Biography section is below):

Biography: John Watson married Elizabeth Ann Jones of Prince Edward County, Virginia. John Warson was High Sheriff and later became a magistrate of Prince Edward County; Elizabeth Ann Jones brother was Revolutionary War General Joseph Jones.

Note: Although the source for the above indicates that Elizabeth Ann Jones b 1750 is the sister of Gen Joseph Jones this is unverified and possibly incorrect. Elizabeth Jones is indicated as being the daughter of a Thomas Jones. Gen Joseph Jones b 1727 is said to be the son of James Jones and Hester Davis.[1] James and Hester Jones did have an Elizabeth Jones b 1725, however she married, Andrew Spence Monroe b. 1727. father of Pres James Monroe.[2]It could be that Elizabeth is the niece of Joseph Jones, however more research is needed to determine this.

Name Hester Davis seems familiar to me.

More on the above based on my research today:

o  I noticed that John Watson II (1745-1814) who witnessed John Miller's Feb., 1795 will, grandparents were Ann Stratton & Joseph Watson.  Also John Watson II's wife, Elizabeth Ann Jones' had the same grandparents.

o  Elizabeth Ann Jones had a sister, Mary Jones (b-c. 1761).  Mary Jones' four siblings noted on Wikitree were born c. 1750; 3/19/1750; and 1753.  If Mary Jones' mother, Lucy Watson was born c. 1721, it would be more likely that Mary Jones would have been born prior to her mother's 40th birthday (thus Mary Jones likely would have also been born in the 1740's / 1750's; about the correct time frame to have been the wife of John Miller (1744 - Feb., 1795).

o Maybe John Miller (D-Feb., 1795) daughter, Luckey noted in his will was actually named Lucy (Luckey a transcription error?) after her mother's mother, Lucy Watson (b-c.1721).  However if I recall correctly, John Miller may have also had a mother or grandmother named Lucy.So John Miller's wife Mary (unknown) mentioned in his will may have been Mary Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones & Lucy Watson.  John Miller does name a "brother" "Arch. Jones Miller" in his will.  I feel this is a transcription error due to an assumption that since John Miller called him "brother", his last name must have been Miller.  However I could not find an Archer or Archibald Miller that would fit, so his name may have been Archer Jones.  However Archer Jones does not currently connect to Thomas Jones' (father of Mary Jones) family on WikiTree.

Also as noted earlier Mary Jones was the sister of Elizabeth Ann Jones, wife of John Watson II who was a witness to John Miller's Feb., 1795 will.

I will connect Mary Jones as the possible wife/mother of his children of John Miller on WikiTree (but not certain of this at this point).

John Miller of this WikiTree profile's will; with my comments

John Miller's Prince Edward County, Virginia will dated 2/3/1795 [assume he was named after likely grandfather, John Miller (c.1680-1717 of Lancaster Co., VA]

Mary (wife)

Children:

1. Sally Miller, [maybe named after mother, Mary Heath’s grandmother, Sarah Garlington?]

Prince Edward Co., VA marriage bonds 5/19/1801: Sally Miller, daughter of John Miller, decd. marries George Mosely [John Miller, dec’d father; John C. Miller (Sally’s brother, John Cock Miller) Surety]

Sally Miller married George Mosely-494 (b-c. 1775) in 1801 after John Miller’s death in Feb., 1795. He is NOT connected to George Moseley-2394 II (b-12/18/1758 in Charlottesville, Albemarle Co., VA) at this time. George Moseley-2394 II is a 3rd cousin, 6x removed from me through my Thweatt/Moseley line. George Moseley-2394 II is connected to me through at least four generations of George Moseleys (George was a preferred name in this family of Moseley’s connected to me). Several George Moseleys on WikiTree are from Yorkshire, England and one from Scotland. If Sally married when she was 17, she would have been born circa 1784.

5/19/1801 Prince Edward Co., VA: Sally Miller, daughter of John Miller, decd. marries George Mosely [John Miller, dec’d father; John C. Miller (brother?) Surety

2. Patsy Miller, [Patsy is a nickname for Martha; generally Martha is not considered a nick name for Margaret; however it appears at times they were used as the same name (Martha/Margaret). William Miller-14617’s mother may have been Margaret Carter]

4/23/1800 Prince Edward Co., VA: -bond date: Patsy Miller, daughter of John Miller, decd. to Thomas Eldridge, Jr.; more detail on marriage bond (my 6/16/21 EM notes Surety as “John C. Miller” and her father the same, John Miller, dec’d.). So “John C. Miller” must have been a close relative (her brother, John Cocke Miller?). If Patsy married at age 18, she would have been born circa 1782.

NOTE: Patsy Miller's father's (John Miller) sister, Winfred Jones Miller married Thomas Eldridge-653 III who did have a son named Thomas Eldridge IV that would have been the correct age for the Thomas Eldridge, Jr. that married Patsy Miller; however on WikiTree, Thomas Eldridge-3529 IV is noted to have married Elizabeth Hall on 3/24/1804 (location not noted) and he is noted to have died in Sussex, Virginia. I assume Patsy Miller may have died between 1800 and 1804 and Thomas Eldridge then married Elizabeth Hall in 1804. The family connections on Thomas Eldridge IV"s family do not seem to be totally clear, his siblings were mostly born in different Virginia counties with no explanation why (could be errors on these profiles).

3. Luckey Miller, [Luckey appears to be a surname; maybe a Scottish connection; did a search for “Luckey Miller” born in Goochland Co. and later I listed as Prince Edward Co., VA; born between 1760 and 1795; with no luck]

4. Elizabeth (Miller) Ware, wife of [William Miller-14617’s grandmother was maybe Elizabeth Thornton (1672-c.1743)] James Ware, [I have numerous hits on James Ware in my electronic files]

9/22/1786 Prince Edward Co., VA: Elizabeth Miller, daughter of John Miller marries James Ware [John Miller with his consent; Andrew Ware Surety] If Elizabeth was 18 when she married, she was born circa 1768.

5. Mary Heath Miller, the wife of Robert Hayden, [William Miller-14617’s wife was Mary Heath]

11/3/1792 Prince Edward Co., VA: Mary H. Miller, daughter of John Miller marries Robert Haden [John Miller with his consent; William Miller Surety] If Mary was 18 when she married, she was born circa 1774.

MARRIAGE IN PRINCE EDWARD CO. AROUND SAME TIME FRAME 11/22/1802-bond date: Ann D. Miller, daughter of John Miller, decd. marries Branch Walthall [John Miller, dec’d father; Anderson P. Miller Surety] could John Miller be A.P. Miller’s bro.?]. Anderson P. Miller is my 3rd great grandfather, Anderson Perkins Miller (1776 New Kent Co., VA - 1850 Nottoway Co., VA-near Prince Edward Co., VA border). Anderson Perkins Miller began purchasing land in northeast corner of Prince Edward Co., VA in early 1801.

6. John Cock Miller,

7. William Miller, [likely named after grandfather, William Miller-14617]

Exors: 1. Brother, Arch Jones Miller, [Archibald Jones Miller?; I have come across a few Archibald Millers in my research-redo electronic file search on this name again to see hits] [There is an Archibald Allison Jones-45520 on WikiTree (1760 Surry Co., VA - 1805 Richmond, VA who had a son also named Archibald “H.” Jones (c.1788 Halifax Co., VA); these two Archibald Jones may have had some connection to the naming of Archibald Jones Miller]

2. son, William Miller,

3. and son John Cock Miller, [9/29/1800 Goochland Co, VA: John C. Miller (John Cock Miller?) marries Polly W. Holman; Bondsman: William Holman]

4. Nicholas Davis [maybe son of Nicholas Davies-3503 (1682 New Kent Co., VA - 1774 Lynchburg, VA). Very well could have been the neighbor of John Miller (D-Feb., 1795 P.E. Co., VA) in 1782 named Nicholas Davies who lived in same household with a Samuel Davies. These Davies men likely are connected to Presbyterian Rev. Samuel Davies who founded Presbyterian churches in Hanover, Prince Edward, Cumberland, and Charlotte counties in Virginia in the 1730's/1740's with permission from the Colonial Government.]

5. Earlton Woodson (typo?: Tarlton Woodson?).

Witnesses?:

1. Tarlton Woodson, [Tarleton Woodson-1990, Jr. (c. 1730 Henrico Co., VA - no date Prince Edward Co., VA). His father (1681 Henrico Co., VA -1763 Chesterfield Co., VA) of the same name was a QUAKER. Tarleton Woodson, Jr.'s mother was Ursula Fleming whose grandfather was John Fleming (1633 SCOTLAND - 1686 New Kent Co., VA)

2. John Johnson,

3. John Watson,

4. Thomas Watson, [Thomas Watson-4625 (1761 Cumberland Co., VA -1797 Prince Edward Co., VA). His sister married Richard Cocke-545 (b-1766 Amelia Co., VA)-maybe Cocke family source to John Cocke Miller's middle name? HOWEVER Thomas Watson-4625 has no John Watson relative identified to date on WikiTree that could be the John Watson that also witnessed John Miller's Feb., 1795 P. E. Co., VA will.]

5. Jacob Kellup.

February 16, 1795. [will probate also in February, so John Miller died this month]

The John Miller above that died in 1795 does have Goochland Co. connections:

He is the John Miller and wife, Mary Miller that lived in Prince Edward Co., VA but sold land in Goochland Co., VA in 1793. This John Miller is also the John Miller in the 1792 Prince Edward Co., VA Census and in Henrico Co., VA noted below. He likely was involved in merchant activities as many members of my Miller family were from the 1600's through at least the early 1800's.

3/23/1790 Henrico Co., VA: A John Miller of Prince Edward Co., VA is responsible for the taxes on a Henry Fuqua; 5 Blacks above the age of 16; and 5 horses/colts/or mules. This Henry Fuqua appears to be WikiTree Henry Fuqua-56 (1740 - after 1784; both in Bedford Co., VA which is several miles west of Prince Edward Co.). Henry Fuqua’s sister died in Prince Edward Co. and his mother was born in Henrico Co. Henry Fuqua-56 is the son of Priscilla (Owen) Fuqua and Ralph Fuqua.

6/4/1792 PRINCE EDWARD CO.: While searching census data on 11/17/2017, I found a John Miller in the 1792 Prince Edward County, Virginia census (taken 6/4/1792) that lists this John Miller responsible for taxes on himself and a William Miller. This John also was responsible for tax on 8 Blacks over the age of 16; 3 Blacks between the age of 12 and 16; and 9 horses (no carriages) - see my EM dated 11/17/17.

1793: NOTE (related to the above): Per the link below: MILLER, WARE - JOHN AND MARY MILLER of Prince Edward Co. in 1793 sell land in Goochland Co to JAMES WARE. DAR records have James Ware mar. ELIZABETH MILLER. James Ware b. 27 Dec. 1756 and d. 1818. Can anyone help establish that ELIZABETH is dau. of JOHN AND MARY MILLER. Link: http://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaprince/queries_98-99.htm

Detail on Neighbors living close to John Miller on 6/4/1792 P. E. Co., VA Census

The Census is noted as in 1782 on the link; however it includes several counties that the year is noted as 1783. No date is noted on the Prince Edward Co., VA census section (assume means P. E. Co. census was completed in 1782). So this John Miller could be my 4th great grandfather, John Miller (1736-1782) or his possible son of the same name.

Neighbors within 5 households of this John Miller in 1782:

Dennis Fleider - 6 white; 0 black

Reynold Brightwell - 6 white; 0 black

Martha Bryant - 2 white; 0 black

John Miller himself - 8 white; 19 black

Nicholas Davis - 4 white; 18 black

Elizabeth Davies - 2 white; 13 black

Nicholas Davies & Samuel Davies - 5 white; 20 black

James Taylor - 6 white; 2 black

William Harris (estate) - 0 white; 4 black

William Harris (estate) above could be William Harris-36301 (c.1700 Henrico Co., VA - after 5/27/1767 Powhattan Co., VA). Several of his children are noted to have died in Cumberland Co., VA. So it is possible the family was located on each side of the Appomattox River (maybe near Farmville?).

The Nicholas Davis has a WikiTree profile, Lieutenant Nicholas Davis-56840 (c.1750 Prince Edward Co., VA - 1818 Charlotte Co., VA). NOTE: It does NOT appear that Nicholas Davis is connected or the same person as another neighbor of John Miller in 1782, Nicholas Davies, with a similar last name.

Connection of Nicholas Davis to Miller's: 1. Nicholas Davis' only known son, Stephen Davis married Anne Roach. Anne Roach's grandfather's (Cuthbert Williamson; c.1740-1812) mother was Elizabeth Curd (c.1708-1786) the sister of Dabney Miller's (b-1750) wife's (Sara Anderson Curd) grandfather, Edward Curd, Jr. (born c.1645).

2. Elizabeth Curd's (c. 1708-1786) husband was Cuthbert Williamson (1702-1743) whose niece, Elizabeth Williamson married William Miller II (c.1725-after1783) of Isle of Wight Co., VA and later Henrico Co., VA. William Miller II's descends from James Miller who died in York Co., VA in 1656 the likely brother or other close relative of my 7th great grandfather, Patrick Miller (1620 Scotland - prior 1675 likely in Middlesex Co., VA).

So the above two connections of Nicholas Davis to my known Miller's would give some confirmation that the next door neighbor (John Miller) to Nicholas Davis in the 1782 Prince Edward Co., VA Census was my 4th great grandfather, John Miller (1736-1782). John Miller died the year of the Census (1782).

Several of John Miller's (1736-1782) known sons landed in or near Prince Edward Co., VA or counties bordering Prince Edward Co.: A. John Miller-44531 (1736-1782)'s son, Barbee Miller-44532 (1766 New Kent Co., VA - 1803 Nottoway Co., VA-borders Prince Edward Co. to the east)

B. John Miller-44531's son, Dabney Miller-16363 (1768 New Kent Co., VA - c. 1831 Amelia Co., VA) early land patents appear to be in the northwest corner of Amelia Co. (near the northeast corner of Prince Edward Co.).

C. John Miller-44531's son, Armistead Miller (b. c. 1772) died in 1813 in Prince Edward Co., VA.

D. John Miller-44531's son, Anderson Perkins Miller (1776 New Kent Co., VA - 1850 Nottoway Co., VA) early land patents in 1801 were in the northeast corner of Prince Edward Co., VA, and Anderson died in Nottoway Co. about 2,000 feet from the border of Prince Edward Co. Anderson was my 3rd great grandfather.

It appears that Nicholas Davies and Samuel Davies are merchant Nicholas Davies-41 (c.1690 Wales-9/28/1794 in Bedford Co., VA); however he could not have lived to 104 years. His WikiTree Biography is given below (he lived in Cumberland Co., Va for a period of time). His 1st wife was Judith Fleming daughter of Charles Fleming & Susanna Tarleton of New Kent Co., VA and the widow of Nicholas Davies business partner, Col. Thomas Randolph. His 2nd wife is noted as Anne Beverley, daughter of Peter Beverley-80 (c.1663 Hull, Yorkshire - 1728 Gloucester Co., VA (Beverley Hundred).

Given the information below it is likely that Nicholas Davies and Samuel Davies in the 1782 Prince Edward Co., VA census, neighbors of John Miller (likely my 4th great grandfather, John Miller-44531) were the sons of Nicholas Davies-3503 (born 1682 St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA).

There is also a Nicholas Davies-41's on Wikitree. The documents and statements on his WikiTree profile are somewhat confused between at least two men with the name Nicholas Davies; likely within the same Davies family. The fact Nicholas Davies-41 (or another person of the same name) lived in Cumberland Co., VA for some period of time and Nicholas Davies married Judith Fleming who had also married Thomas Randolph, Nicholas Davies-41's business partner, indicate that John Miller-44531's neighbors were the possible sons of Nicholas Davies-3503 (Nicholas Davies and Samuel Davies).

Nicholas Davies-41 is noted to have a younger brother named Samuel Davies-3513 (1712 Bury Hilton, Richards Castle, Herefordshire, England - 1769 Bristol, England). My Miller's in early Virginia were connected to several families who originated in Bristol, England.

At least three sons of my 4th great grandfather, John Miller-44531's births were recorded at St. Peter's Parish in New Kent Co., VA, the same parish where Nicholas Davies-3503 birth was recorded. All of these three Miller sons landed in Prince Edward and bordering Amelia and Nottoway counties, including my 3rd great grandfather, Anderson Perkins Miller-44530 (1776 New Kent Co. VA - 1850 Nottoway Co., VA). When Anderson died in 1850, he owned a total of 2,000 to 3,000 acres of land in Prince Edward and Nottoway counties including land he owned in other counties.

I also descend from Thomas Randolph, Nicholas Davies' business partner's family. My Miller's were merchants of Scottish descent involved with the movement of goods up and down the James River between Richmond and at least Scottsville, VA as well as on the Appomattox River between Petersburg and Farmville, VA in Prince Edward Co.

John Miller (D-Feb., 1795)? was a Surety on the August 27,1799 (probated 10/21/1799) Prince Edward Co., VA will of Littleberry Davis

his wife was Catherine Davis; witnesses:

Goodrich Wilson NOTE: Recorded on 7/26/1742 Isle of Wight Co., VA: Goodrich Wilson's estate appraisal by Thomas Day, John Goodrich, and WILLIAM MILLER. THIS WOULD ADD SOME INDICATION THAT JOHN MILLER (D-Feb., 1795) may descend from WILLIAM MILLER of Isle of Wight Co., VA IF this Goodrich Wilson is the father or grandfather of the Goodrich Wilson that witnesses Littleberry Davis' 1799 P. E. Co., VA will.

NOTE: Goodrich Wilson likely descends from Goodrich Wilson-9172 born in Isle of Wight Co., VA likely in birth year range of 1700 to 1721. His father was James Wilson-6482 (1682-Feb., 1721, both in Isle of Wight Co., VA) and his mother was Honour Goodrich-529 (1685 - 1761 both in Isle of Wight Co., VA). No descendants of Goodrich Wilson are entered on WikiTree to date. This Goodrich is not connected so far to the Mr. William Wilson of Isle of Wight & Old Elizabeth City Co., VA that is connected to my Millers.

John Miller of this profile maybe the son of William Miller II of Isle of Wight Co.,VA

The below could indicate that John Miller who died in February, 1795 in Prince Edward Co., VA father may have been William Miller II of Isle of Wight Co., VA who married Elizabeth Williamson. William and Elizabeth lived in Henrico Co., VA (same county John Miller (D-Feb., 1795) lived for a time with his wife Mary. However currently I do not have William Miller II having a son named John Miller (however have not found William Miller II's will). William Miller II's wife, Elizabeth Williamson's father was a JOHN Williamson.

Also merchant Hugh Miller (1710 Scotland - 1762 London) is connected to the same Cocke family as Isle of Wight Co., VA Millers which could indicate a connection between Isle of Wight Co., VA Millers and Scottish Virginia merchant Hugh Miller (see below).

John Miller who died in Feb., 1795 in Prince Edward Co., VA named a son John Cocke Miller-47748 (c.1777-prior 1830).

William Miller II (1723 Isle of Wight Co., VA -1770 Henrico Co., VA?) married Elizabeth Williamson (not his 1st wife apparently). They had a granddaughter named Elizabeth Miller who married John Gray (b-1741 Surry Co., VA) whose grandmother was Mary Cocke (b-c.1680), daughter of Thomas Cocke (1652-c.1697).

Mary Cocke's (b-c.1680) sister, Anne (Cocke) Bolling's daughter, Jane Bolling (1722-1762) married merchant Hugh Miller (1710 Scotland - 1762 London). Two of Hugh Miller's daughters married Sir Peyton Skipwith.

John Miller that witness land transaction by Patrick Henry

The John Miller of this WIkiTree profile appears to have lived a bit west of Farmville, VA in Prince Edward Co., VA. Patrick Henry's land transaction (see below) involved land a few east of Farmville, VA. It is difficult to trace any male with the name of John (about 7% of men at the time were named John) in early Virginia; however I feel the John Miller that witnessed Patrick Henry's land patent was the John Miller of this WikiTree profile. Two or three of my Millers married Patrick Henry's grandchildren.

  • History of Prince Edward County 323

PATRICK HENRY.

After his final incumbency of the Governorship of the State (1784), the celebrated Patrick Henry made his resi- dence for a time in Prince Edward County, dwelling upon the banks of the Appomattox from the latter part of 1786, until 1794.

Entries in the Registry Office at Farmville on page 187, book 9, under date of, October 13, 1792, show that he. on that day, conveyed to Augustus Watson of Nottoway, and holding of 936 acres, on the Appomattox River, for 936 pounds "cur- rent money of Virginia.*' The property was described as follows : "Beginning at Tarlton Woodson's line on the Sandy Ford road, thence along his line, north seven and one-half de- grees west two hundred and twenty poles to pointers. Thence north, eighty-one degrees east twenty poles on Venable's line, to a branch. Thence down the said branch as it meanders to Appomattox river. Thence down th^ said river one hundred and fourteen poles, to a corner on the banks of the said river. Thence south five degrees, west one hundred and fifty poles to pointers. Thence south twenty-four degrees east eighteen poles, to a poplar fell down. Thence south sixty-four and a half degrees east three hundred and fifty poles to pointers, hence south sixty-three degrees west one hundred and twenty- four poles, to a white oak. Thence thirty-three degrees west, to the road. Thence up the said road as it meanders, to the beginning, with all houses, woods and under woods, ways, waterance, water courses, etc."

Signed, Patrick Henry,

Dorothea Henry, (his wife)

And witnessed by: Tarlton Woodson, John Miller, Woodson Allen, John Watson.

Two John Millers

(I am modifying the family of this John Miller based on his February, 1795 Prince Edward County, Virginia will I discovered a few days ago; so some of the below information no longer applies)

Currently I list John Miller-44531 (1736 - 1782), my 4th great grandfather as a half brother to John Miller-59494 (c.1755- prior 1795).  I have heard of a very limited number of instances where a father has two sons by the same name (with both children living at the same time); however this is quite rare and likely not the situation in this case of two John Millers.  However at this time I will leave these two John Millers as half brothers until when (and if) I can sort this out.

Connections of Middlesex Co., VA Millers to Alexander Miller, Sr. of PA, etc.

Hugh Walker, Sr. (1740-1800) was security for John Miller's marriage to Hester Christian in Middlesex Co., VA on 12/10/1774.  The marriage bond was taken out a couple days earlier on 12/8/1774.

In Israel Christian's WikiTree profile (ID: Christian-796) below, it is noted:

"Israel's manor in Staunton was later known as "Willoughby", and for some time before that as "Walnut Hills". The following is excerpted from #251 of the "Works Progress Administration of Virginia Historical Inventory" - "Research made by Nellie D. Drexel, Staunton, Virginia", dated February 23, 1938. The present (October, 1996) address of the property is 919 Middlebrook.

A: Formerly Walnut Hills.

2.LOCATION: Western part of Staunton,Virginia on border of Augusta County. 3. DATE: About 1751. 4. OWNERS:

Sold by William Beverley of `Blandfield', Essex County, Virginia about l738 to James Miller, and contained an even 300 acres. In 1754 Miller sold lo Isreal Christian. In 1763 Christian sold to William Fleming. In 1767 Fleming sold to Robert Reed. In 1799 adjudged to widow of Robert Reed, Margaret Reed and that Judgment affirmed in 1805. In 1810 Margaret Reed, who became Mrs. George Matthews, sold to Chapman Johnson, who lived there for many years and made the first improvements."

The below is noted on Israel Christian's WikiTree profile.  So, Israel was a merchant who supplied Col. Peachey's battalion and another military group supplies during the American Revolution.  I wonder if this was Col. William Peachey-1190 (1729 Richmond Co., VA - 1803 VA).  Col. William Peachey-1190 was the uncle of Catherine Peachey who married Josiah Ryland (see family tree just below).  Josiah Ryland and the Peacheys and Walkers were connected to Thomas Miller of King & Queen Co., VA that I have been trying to identify for a couple of years.

" Israel's mercantile store served as a commissary for Col. Peachey's battalion, and sometimes for First Virginia Reg't troops until April, 1780"

James Miller noted above appears to be James Miller-61789 (b- circa 1712 in Ireland (family tree & WikiTree profile are below).

I noticed that James Miller's brother named a son Patrick Miller which gives some support that their great grandfather was Patrick Miller, Sr. James Miller (b-c.1712)'s brother, John Miller's son (Patrick Miller) did name a son Alexander Miller (who I am assuming is James Miller, b-c. 1712 and his brother, John Miller's grandfather's name). There were also at least a few other Alexander Millers in their descendant tree. So this naming pattern would support Alexander Miller, Sr. (c.1650 - c. 1731 PA) and Patrick Miller (b- 1620 Scotland - c. 1675 likely in Middlesex Co., VA) being James Miller & his brother John Miller's grandfather and great grandfather.

Biography

NOTE: John Miller; son of Christopher Miller (b-1/27/1726)'s could not have been born until after her 1st husband Christopher Miller (b- circa 1708) had wrote his will in 1755 and likely no later than 1760 when Christopher Miller (b. c. 1708)'s will was probated. So I changed this John Miller to born circa 1755 from circa 1748.

Christopher Miller (b-1/27/1726) married Ann Elizabeth (Dabney) Miller after her 1st husband, Christopher Miller (c. 1708-1759) had died. Christopher Miller (b-c. 1708) will was written on 2/18/1755 and proved on 1/1/1760. Given he states the following near the beginning of his will: "I, Christopher MILLER of the County of Middlesex being weak and sick in body”; he could have very well died in 1755; and Ann Elizabeth Dabney likely married Christopher Miller (b-1726) later in 1755 when this Christopher Miller was 29 years old. Given Christopher Miller (b-1726) would have been almost 30 later in 1755, he may have had a 1st wife who past away after giving birth his known son named John Miller. Thus both Christopher Miller (b-1726) & Ann Elizabeth Dabney would have both likely been widowed in the 1750’s. Say if Christopher Miller (b-1726) was 22 when his 1st child was born to his unidentified 1st wife, his son John Miller could have been born circa 1748 and been only 7 years old when his father married Ann Elizabeth Dabney. This John Miller (b-c. 1748) could have had a daughter born as circa 1769 who would have been 17 when Elizabeth Miller “daughter of John Miller” married James Ware on 9/22/1786.

John Miller who likely died between 1792 and 1800 in P. E. Co. had the following daughters:

o Elizabeth (Miller) Ware + James Ware - 9/22/1786

o Mary H. [Hester?] (Miller) Haden + Robert Haden - 11/3/1792

o Patsy (Miller) Eldridge + Thomas Eldridge (John C. Miller Surety) - 4/23/1800

o Sally (Miller) Mosely + George Mosely (again John C. Miller Surety) - 5/19/1801

o Ann D. [Dabney?] (Miller) Walthall + Branch Walthall - 11/22/1802 (Anderson P. Miller Surety)-which Anderson P. Miller?

NOTE: Determined later that the John Miller noted below could not have been the John Miller of this WikiTree profile since per Rev. War Pension record "furnishing supplies" this John Miller died prior to 1795. Per the link below (The Mercer family, 1652-1976; a family genealogy published in 1979 if I recall correctly) notes on page 39 that Braxton Dunleavy and his wife Mary sold a John Miller 9 acres of land for nine pounds in 1797. The John Miller of his WikiTree profile seems to be the best fit for the John Miller that purchased the above 9 acres of land. Braxton Dunlevy's daughter, Nancy Dunlevy married Isham Miller, Jr. on 3/23/1812.

If this John Miller was born in 1758, he likely was NOT the John Miller that married Hester Christian since he would have only been about 16 years old on the date of the marriage. It is so difficult to determine what John Miller appears on documents since it is such a common name. However, the John Miller of this profile could have been born several years earlier if Ann Dabney was NOT his mother. His father (Christopher Miller) was in his early 30's when he married Ann Dabney, so Christopher Miller could have had an earlier wife that was the mother of the John Miller of this WikiTree profile. BUT; I just noticed that John Miller named a daughter Ann Dabney Miller which would indicate that his mother was Ann Dabney; so the John Miller of this WikiTree profile is quite likely NOT the John Miller that married Hester Christian.

NOTE: A Hugh Walker was Security/Witness of the 1774 marriage of the John Miller to Hester Christian.

Not sure if the Hugh Walker(s) below is the same Hugh Walker (and his son of the same name) as above: January 14, 1764 - Jane Vobe [Partner of Robert Miller] agrees to lease, from Hugh Walker, a Williamsburg merchant, an unspecified number of acres in Bruton Parish where her customers can pasture their horses.

1782 Page 117 Middlesex Co., VA Wills, Inventories, etc.: SAMUEL LEWIS: “(p. 350) Thomas Iverson of Urbanna….. 22 Jun 1782 / 22 Jan 1798… Aunt Catherine Walker. Cousin Jane Denison and Sarah Gale Morgain. Cousins Mary WALKER, Kitty Walker, Hugh Walker, Clary Stubs Walker and Sukey Walker. Cousin Hugh Walker. Goddaughter and cousin Clara Stubs Walker. John was born about 1768. He was the son of Christopher Miller and Ann Unknown. He passed away after 1782.

WIfe Ann Miller land adjoining my mother's dwelling place. My three children viz William Miller, John Miller and Fanney Dabney Miller. Wit: Thomas Bland and Elizabeth Kidd. Ann Miller is executrix."
  • From Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts 1673 - 1812 by William Lindsay Hopkins (1989):

9/17/1770: Christopher Miller records his will which is not probated until 4/22/1782 (the same year that John Miller likely died): "Wife Ann Miller land adjoining my mother's dwelling place. My three children viz William Miller, John Miller and Fanney Dabney Miller. Wit: Thomas Bland and Elizabeth Kidd. Ann Miller is executrix." So it appears this Christopher did marry to an Ann (Unknown) and they had three children living in 1770 and likely these children were living in 1782 when the will was probated since no changes in the will seemed to occur.

4/22/1782: Christopher Miller's will above was probated indicating he had died by this date.

Source for below is Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812; published 1989:

10/13/1799: A John Miller witnesses a will of a John Humphris, Sr. where a Jacob SAUNDERS and his wife Lucy (Unknown) are also mentioned. SAUNDERS is a DNA cousin surname. (NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE JOHN MILLER ON THIS PROFILE)

UPDATE: I am now comfortable to say the John Miller that witnessed the 1799 will of John Humphris, Sr. was the John Miller of this WikiTree profile. John Miller's wife Avarilla Clark Saunders was the sister of Jacob [Stiff] Saunders who was also mentioned in the will with his wife, Lucy (Humphries) Saunders, the daughter of John Humphris, Sr.

"(p.56) John Humphris, Sr. 13 Oct 1799 / Apr 1800....Wife Mary Humphris. Son Seaton Humphris land purchased from William Hackney. Son Staige Humphris. Son Nelson Humphris (under 21). All my children viz Nelson Humphris, Seaton Humphris, William Cean Humphris, Staige Humphris and Lucy Humphris. (P.82 shows 'Jacob Saunders in right of his wife Lucy [Saunders]'.) Exors: Wife and sons Seaton Humphris and Nelson Humphris. Wit: David Palmer, JOHN MILLER, John Minter and Isaac Jones."

THE 1807 WILL OF A NEILS WINNING WHICH IS WITNESSED BY A STAGE HUMPHREY MAY INDICATE THE 10/13/1799 DOC ABOVE DOES REFER TO THE JOHN MILLER ON THIS WIKITREE PROFILE:

"(p. 494) Neils Winning....10 Oct 1807 / 24 Dec 1810....Wife Ann Winning. FANNY DABNEY MILLER 'at the death of her mother'. ISHAM MILLER 'after the death of his mother'. Exors: David Palmer and Isham Miller. Wit: Thomos Clar, Moses Walker and Stage HUMPHRES."
