Daniel served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. LST-577, U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Dayton, Ohio prior to the war. He enlisted in the Navy on March 14, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio.
LST-577 was hit by a torpedo fired from Japanese submarine RO-50 off the eastern coast of Mindanao causing the ship to brake into two sections.
The aft section sank immediately. 166 were lost including 100 U.S. Army passengers and 66 of the ships crew. The ship's commander, Lt. Carl H. Stahl, was one of those lost.
Daniel was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
