Biography

Mary was born in Danby-with-Castleton in 1877, and her birth registered in Guisborough District in he March quarter of 1878 ^[1].

In 1881, Mary, aged 3 was living in Danby Road, Danby (Gisborough, North Riding of Yorkshire a cordwainer [shoe-maker]) with her parents Thomas (40, born Wombledon, Yorkshire) and Eliza (37, born Staffordshire) and her sisters (all born Danby): Ann Elizabeth (11), Emma (7), Violetta (6), Mary (3) and John (1) ^[2].

In 1891 the family were still living in Danby,, at 13 Danby End (Eliza's place of birth in Staffordshire now given - Stafford). Thomas is now described as a boot and shoe maker. Mary is now 13, and the other children in the household are John (now 11) and EHannah (aged 9). The two younger children are scholars, but no occupation is given for Mary.

In 1901 Mary was working as a housemaid, living with the family at an address not given with Allan Rowntree, his wife Sarah and their two sons, Allan Claude and William (wikitree profile to be created). Mary's sister Violet was also a servant here ^[3].

In 1911 Mary Miller was still a servant, working for the Rowntrees. Violet was no longer a sercvant here, replaced by Edith Mary Shannon^[4]. death in 1912 Mary married Allan Rowntree^[5] - possibly where his previous wife had died. From the 1939 register, we know Mary was born on 13 December 1877.

In 1939 Allan and Mary (born 12 December 1877), together with Nellie Kerr, "on independent means" and a female servant were living at Westwood (today Westwood House), Westwood, Scarborough^[6].

Mary died on the 12 May 1961, and her death was registered in the Scarbourough Registration District ^[7]. In her probate record (proven 2 June 1961 , Mary is a resident of Cherry Trees, Scarborough. Cherry Trees is a house built on the estate of the original plot of Westwood Villa ('Westwood' in 1939). The address is Granville Road rather than Westwood (the Road) as at that time Cherry Trees was accessed from Granville Road. In c. 2015 a new access road was run from Westwood to Cherry Trees. The beneficiary of Mary's estate was Caroline Olive Button ^[8].
