Biography

Amelia (Miller) Beer was born in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Amelia was born in Taliaris near Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire in 1865. She was the daughter of Josiah Miller and his wife Sarah. Josiah was a gamekeeper on the Taliaris Estate. [1]

On the 1871 Census, Amelia was aged 5 and living at Penygar on the Taliaris Estate with her parents and siblings Elizabeth, William and Francis. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

On the 1891 Census, Amelia was lodging with the Littlejohns family at 8 Elm Grove, Bideford, Devon. She was working as a laundress at the collar works. The daughters of the Littlejohn family were all doing the same work.[7]

Amelia married John Beer on 27 October 1895 in Bideford. They went on to have 6 children.[8] [9] [10]

In 1900 their first child Lewis died, aged just 3 years and 2 months.[11]

On the 1901 Census, Amelia and John were living at 7 Myrtle Grove, Bideford with daughters Emily aged 1 and Amelia aged just 5 months. John was a mason. [12]

On the 1911 Census, Amelia and John were still living at 7 Myrtle Grove with 5 children; Emily aged 11, Amelia aged 10, Alfred aged 8, William aged 7 and Albert aged 3. Amelia and John had been married for 15 years. They had had 6 children, one of whom Lewis, had died. Their house consisted of 6 rooms.

On the 1939 Register Amelia and John are still living at 7 Myrtle Grove. Also living with them is Charles Littlejohns born 11 March 1921, a stationer's shop assistant. John is shown as a retired house mason.[13]

John died in 1939.

Amelia died on the 10 February 1945. At the time of her death she was living at 24 Higher Gunstone, Bideford. She was 79 years old. Probate was granted on 7 April to Amelia Mabel Littlejohns and William Henry Beer, labourer. Effects were £525 15s 4d.[14][15]

Research Notes

  • I have been unable to find Amelia, or her father, anywhere on the 1881 Census
  • The 1891 Census has Amelia born in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire, which is incorrect.
  • The Littlejohns family, who Amelia was boarding with, are important to the family as Amelia Mabel goes on to marry one of them but I am unclear as to whether there was a connection before this point.
  • Based on the headstone of her son Lewis, Amelia was known as Minnie but there is no family knowledge of this.
