[1]== Biography == Samuel was born in 1923. He passed away in 2008. He was a member of the merchant Marines during WWII, making the dangerous Murmansk Run on the Charles M Schwab Liberty Ship. He also was on the crew of the tugboat Trinidad Head, which towed components of the artificial harbors from England to Normandy in preparation for the D Day invasion. Later, they towed damaged ships back to England for repair. He was an avid diver. He told the story of his Merchant Marine training in Sheepshead Bay, where the trainees were required to jump from a plank set up on the top deck of the ship into the water as a practice for emergency evacuation of the ship. Sam slowly approached the end of the board, looked down and walked back. The training officer shouted, "Let's go, Miller. You're jumping off that board." Sam turned, took 3 steps, bounced as high as he could and did a 2 1/2 summersault off the board and into the water. His dives were much appreciated at the community pool in subsequent years as he put on exhibitions in the diving bay during the required rest period while children gathered around the edge to watch. Cannonballs that splashed everyone were especially popular. Sam had a career as a building supplies salesman.
