Biography

Sergeant Fountain Miller served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Apr 25, 1861
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 2nd Reg't Tennessee Infantry Co. F

Fountain Hance "Fount" Miller was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, a farmer who migrated from Tennessee to Texas and later Oklahoma, and the father of four children.

Fount was born on 13 January 1840[1] in Rutherford County, Tenn., the oldest of eight children born to Hardy H. Miller and his second wife, Sarah T. "Sallie" (Mayfield) Miller; he also had seven older half-siblings from Hardy's previous marriage. Fount was the great-grandson of Irish immigrant Isaac Miller, for whom the town of Millersburg was named. The 1850 census lists him as age 9 (more likely, he was 10).

Fount's father died when he was approximately 17. In the 1860 census, Fount is enumerated as a "laborer" on the family farm, with his mother as the sole head of household.

When the Civil War broke out, Fount enlisted in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry (Robison's) regiment, Company F, taking part in several battles. He was captured by the Union army in July 1864 near Atlanta and spent almost a year in federal prison camps. He was released from Point Lookout, Md. prison camp in June 1865.[4]

On 5 December 1865 in Rutherford County, Fount married first Sarah Lee (Davis) Miller, daughter of Rutherford County farmer Abel Davis.[5] Sarah bore him two daughters:

  • Flora Anne Miller (1866-1948), married A.B. Barber
  • Sarah Lee (Sallie) Miller (1868-1958), did not marry

On 7 March 1866, Fountain purchased land in District 20 of Rutherford County from F.G. Miller.[6]

On 15 September 1869, Fount sold 31-1/2 acres on Long Creek to his sister-in-law Arabella Miller.[7] This land bordered land owned by his father-in-law Abel Davis.

On 5 May 1870, Fount and his brother-in-law Archibald B. "Baldy" Davis went together to buy a 19-acre property in District 14 from Minos L. Fletcher.[8] (On 16 April 1872, Fount sold his interest in that property to C.R. Davis for $300[9].)

Sarah died sometime in 1870, per her tombstone.[10][11] In the 1870 census, Fountain Miller is shown living with his brother-in-law Archibald "Baldy" Davis; Fount's two daughters appear in the family listing, but both are also enumerated elsewhere. Fount was eventually unable to care for the young daughters by himself, and they were taken in and raised by other families.

Fount married second the widow Louisa S. Jones (Aug. 5, 1871, Rutherford County)[13], but this marriage ended in divorce, as Louisa claimed Fount had deserted her.

On 7 April 1873, Fount purchased 40-1/2 acres in District 20 from his brother, Pink Miller[14], and 40-1/2 more acres in the same district from J.A. Miller.[15]

On 9 April 1873, Fount purchased 68 acres from J.A. Miller.[16] On 25 November 1874, Fount put up those same 68 acres in a deed of trust to M.C. Jordan.[17]

On 26 September 1877, Fount sold 27 acres in District 20 of Rutherford County to Nathan Franklin for $295.[18]

For unknown reasons, Fount does not appear in the 1880 U.S. Census.

Fount married third (Oct. 31, 1883, Rutherford County) Harriet Lucretia "Hattie" (Gregory) Miller[19], the widow of his younger brother. Fount became a stepfather to Hattie's children, and he and Hattie would have two more daughters together:

  • Harriet Irene (Hattie) Miller (1885-1940), married 1) Fredrick Hampton Estes, married 2) James Bert (Jim) Marean
  • Lydia Agatha (Liddie) Miller (1887-1977), married Obert Owen Miller

"F.H. Miller" appears in District 20 of Rutherford County on an 1891 state census of male voters.[20]

About 1893 Fount, Hattie, and their children moved to Grayson County, Texas, near Whitesboro, where they resided in 1900.

In about 1908 Fount and Hattie moved to Hugo, Oklahoma (Choctaw County), where Fount passed away on 6 October 1909.[1] His exact burial place is unknown. Hattie applied for and received a Confederate pension from the state of Oklahoma, which supported her until she died in 1938.[22]

Notes

It seems likely that Fountain was named by his mother after Fountain S. Mayfield and Hance W. Mayfield, prominent farmers of Rutherford County in the 1830s. In 1850, Sarah Mayfield Miller's and Hance W. Mayfield's families lived close together in Rutherford County. However, the exact relationship between Fount's mother and these two Mayfield farmers is unknown.

The circumstances of Fount's death, the exact date of his death, and his burial place are all mysteries. The best guess is that he died in Hugo, Oklahoma on 6 Oct 1909, as the pension application says; but in a different place in the same pension file, the date 4 Oct 1910 is given. Fount's wife Hattie, his daughter Hattie MAREAN and several other close relatives are buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hugo; but there is not a marker for Fount (I've looked). For a Confederate veteran, it does not seem as though there was much fanfare over his death.
