She was born circa December 1837 in Preston, Lancashire.[1][2] She was baptised in St. John on Sunday 31 December 1837 in Preston, Lancashire, 53.7585, -2.696.[3] As of 1838, she was also known as Jennie. She presumably lived with her parents in Sleddon Street, Preston, Lancashire, on 21 February 1840.[4]
She was recorded as living with her parents and sister Eliza in the 1841 census at Sleddon Street, Preston, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 3 years old.[5] She presumably lived with her parents in North Road, Preston, Lancashire, on 4 October 1844.[6] She presumably lived with her parents in 135 North Road, Preston, Lancashire, circa October 1850.[7] Her occupation was recorded as being a drawer in a cotton mill in the census.[8]
She was recorded as living with her parents and siblings Lizzie, Emma, Frederick and Patty in the 1851 census at 13 Great Shaw Street, Preston, Lancashire, 53.761841,-2.70489. She was recorded as being 13 years old.[9]
Ann Jane Miller was listed as a servant in the household of John Piercy in the 1861 census at 120 Hamford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 23 years old. However, it is likely that she was an employee of Mr. Piercy's - a linen draper - like five other servants, three of who were in the drapery trade.[10] She was a milliner.[11]
She may have attended Lizzie Miller and John Jameson's wedding Lizzie and John went on to have four children together in Parish church on Monday 8 May 1865 in Leyland, Manchester.[12][13][14]
She may have attended the wedding of her brother in the marriage of Frederick Horrocks Miller and Sarah Rowe in a Church of England ceremony in Manchester Cathedral on Saturday 21 September 1867 in Manchester. Sarah and Frederick went on to have just one child together.[15][16]
Ann and Harriet Breach attended the wedding of James Child Breach and her sister Emma Miller in a Church of England ceremony in St. Peter's on Wednesday 6 May 1868 Emma's father was a cotton mill manager in Bolton, Lancashire. They also signed the marriage certificate as witnesses. Others who may have attended the wedding include Mary Fairclough as mother of the bride, Robert T. Miller as father of the bride, Mary Child as mother of the groom and James Breach as father of the groom.[17]
Her mother died 7 September 1869 at the approximate age of 58 years. Ann was aged about 32 when this happened.[18]
She was recorded as living with her father in the 1871 census at 20 Fylde Street, Preston, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 33 years old.[19]
Her father died 14 June 1874.[20]
She may have attended the wedding of her sister in the marriage of George Leonard Darby and Patty Miller in a Congregationalist ceremony in the Independent Chapel on Thursday 5 August 1875 in Ashton upon Mersey, Sale, Cheshire. Neither Patty nor George had surviving parents at the time of their marriage. They went on to have three daughters together, the first born five months after their wedding (similarly, her mother was pregnant when she married).[21][22][23]
Ann Jane Miller was recorded as a visitor to the household of Emma Miller in the 1881 census at Marlborough Road "Woodstock", Sale, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 41 years old, just visiting her sister and family.[24]
She resided in the 1901 census at Goosnargh Hospital, Goosnargh, Lancashire, 53.828826,-2.664928. Her age was recorded as 63 years old.[25]
Ann died on 18 June 1906 in Goodraegh Hall, Preston, Lancashire.[26][27] She was unmarried.
