Biography

Following the death of my father in 1998 I discovered the beginnings of a Millett family tree

Here's an image.
compiled together with a Robin Robilliard who had travelled from New Zealand to Ireland on a Genealogy project researching her Anglo/Irish Millett history.

Throughout my childhood my father regaled me with stories of well to do ancestors who lit his pipe with an old white fiver and lived in big fancy houses [1] [2] [3] and even a castle [4] [5] There were many Millett’s in Tipperary, Kilkenny and up around Mayo Damer Millett (abt.1828-1912), Ireland from the mid 1600s. After the English Reformation in1500s, the Gaelic Irish and the Old English descendants of the Norman conquerors refused to renounce their Catholicism. A series of Catholic rebellions and plantations of British Protestant settlers followed. In 1641 a renewed Catholic rebellion led to the creation of the Catholic Confederacy which for a time ruled two thirds of Ireland from their stronghold in Kilkenny. Led by James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, they supported the deposed King Charles I. The Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell's invasion of 1649 and the final defeat of the Catholics in 1653 led to the almost complete transportation of the Gaelic population of Tipperary to Connaught. Tipperary was given to Cromwell's soldiers as payment for their services but the Gaelic Irish were soon to return. Many Protestant settlers grew tired of rebel attack, sold their property and returned to Britain. After 1660 when the Protectorate came to an end and the British monarchy was restored under Charles II, British Protestant, Catholic Old English and Catholic Gaelic Irish families shared the countryside. In the middle of the decade the hearth tax was introduced as it was considered easier to establish the number of hearths than numbers of people for the purposes of taxation. The records from the years 1665-1667 demonstrate that the Catholic Gaelic Irish population of Tipperary had returned and now outnumbered the Protestant planters.

There were Milletts in Ireland from the mid 1600s from around the time of the English civil war and later when Cromwell led a Parliamentary invasion of Ireland from 1649–50, we could be descended from the iniquitous land settlers described by Winston Churchill

Famous Cousins:- churchill-4 Spencer-40 who had a great way with words... Churchill quote : “By an uncompleted process of terror, by an iniquitous land settlement, by the virtual proscription of the Catholic religion, by the bloody deeds already described, he cut new gulfs between the nations and the creeds…. Upon all of us there still lies ‘the curse of Cromwell.’ ”

[6] Tree on Family search

I found this recently, RUMINATIONS [7] A marvellous website on Petrie genealogy, a family I have a connection to from my grand fathers sister Elizabeth (Millett) Petrie I really feel drawn to the names but more likely it's the author's skill at writing that grips you and holds you till the last... Can you have anecdotal facts, whatever its called I will endeavour to introduce as much of my interpretation of what I discover, whilst not straying from the facts.

Hi Again Francis,

Love the biography, so very true.

To add more tags for the project and the other surnames you mention in your comment click this link to get to your Tags: editing your tags

A common mistake we come across for Northern Ireland is the terms use for early profiles. As Northern Ireland was created in 1921 the correct place name for location fields on profiles before 1921 is Ireland Appreciate the work you are doing on your tree and your wish to be as accurate as possible

Any questions just ask in the genealogist 2 Genealogist (G2G) forum, always someone around to help.

Thanks Francis for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects coordinating them is essential. Please ensure location data matches date of profile and avoid abbreviations. Citations & links for sources enable verification of data please add from wiki ID go to Research to find sources

The Irish Roots Project may be of interest. Adding the tag IRISH_ROOTS will provide updates about the project.

Explore Pre-1700 Projects list to find one that fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Read the goals & tasks of the project join if it fist

Hi

If you can add geographical information (such as country/state of origin) and dates (eg. 1800's, mid 1900's etc.) as well as relationships(Parents, Grandparents etc) to your tags, it will make it easier for others to find you.
