Biography
Robert Bruce Milligan was born on 16th July 1936 in Taree, New South Wales, Australia.
After graduating Officer Cadet School, Portsea as Dux, Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Australian Regular Army and posted to the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR). [1]
Robert married Carolyn Marion Harris in 1964 in St Leonards, New South Wales. [2]
On 22nd April 1966, as a temporary Captain, he deployed with the battalion to South Vietnam. [1]Aged 30 years, and along with his company commander Major Donald Bourne he was killed in action on 14th February 1967 during a patrol at An Nhut, near Dat Do, Phuoc Tuy Province. A 'friendly' booby trap set by the South Vietnamese to stop Viet Cong incursions had been tripped. Robert had just two weeks more to serve before returning to Australia. [3]
