Biography

John was born 10 January 1748 in Drumbo, County Down, Ireland. He was the son of David and Ann Milling. The family names probably indicate they were of Scots origin and were settlers in Ulster.

At some point he emigrated with two of his brothers, David and Hugh, to America.

He married Jane Wright in St Michael's Lutheran church in Philidelphia on 8 August 1771[1]. They must have moved to South Carolina soon after the wedding and settled in what would later become Fairfield County. They went on to have three children, Mary in 1772, David in 1773 and Sarah in 1776.

He took up arms against the British during the Revolutionary War and was recorded as a captain[2].

John was the first clerk of the county court from 1783[3]

He is recorded as receiving a land grant in Greenville County in 1784[4]

He passed away 5 May 1788, aged 40[5]. He was buried in the Milling Cemetery off Jackson Creek Road in Fairfield County, South Carolina. The inscription reads: " Sacred to the Memory of John Milling Esq. an Officer of the Revolutionary Army, who died the 5th day of May 1788, aged 40 years, 3 months & 25 days."
