Biography

Ruth Mills was the first child of Lieut. Gideon Mills & Rith Humphrey.[1] She married Owen Brown.[1] She is the mother of the famous abolitionist John Brown.

Local tradition holds that Ruth was the first person buried in the new Hudson Cemetery; Spring flooding caused her casket to surface; the town moved the cemetery to what is now Church Street just North of the town square in Hudson, Summit, Ohio, where her very weathered grave marker is still visible (as of 2019). [2]

Ruth was born in 1772.
