John Henry Mills, Sr. was born about 1838 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to Joel H. Mills and Susanna Elliot. Parents were wed in Pittsylvania on February 17, 1835.

John's gravestone is shown on the Pittsylvania County History website, but no dates are on the stone.

In 1933 a military headstone was shipped to son James E Mills. The paperwork notes death as August 14, 1913.

John first shown in the 1850 census with parents in Pittsylvania. That record and the 1860 Pittsylvania record show Joel(est 1815) and Susanna(est 1817) with the following children:

  4. George C. 1840
  5. Nathaniel 1842
  6. Sarah E. 1851
  7. Robert B. 1855
  8. Hezekiah 1857

John H. Mills would enlist in the CSA when the Civil War began in 1861. He would be in the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company D. A cousin, Caleb W. Mills was in the same unit. Caleb would end up marrying John's next door neighbor, Eliza A. Elliot.

John would survive the war, and marry Emma Ann Davis in Pittsylvania of November 24, 1868, and 1870 would find the couple with their first son John(1869) , north of Dan River in Pittsylvania, Virginia. The 1880 and 1900 Callands, Pittsylvania censuses and death records for 1872 and 1877 would bring known children to:

  1. John T. Mills 1869
  2. Elizabeth 1872- Aug 16, 1872
  3. James H. Mills 1873- Oct. 10, 1877
  4. Leila F. 1874
  5. Leroy K. 1880
  6. James E. 1884

Son James E. Mills would sign for the military headstone for his father.
