Biography

When Mary Anne Mills was born in 1817 in Monaghan, her father, James, was 23, and her mother, Sarah, was 22. She had three sons and three daughters with Robert Stephen Hayes between 1842 and 1856. She died on 28 October 1900 in Kempsey, New South Wales, having lived a long life of 83 years.

Mary Anne, a married female immigrant, arrived with her husband on the Royal Consort in 1840. According to the immigration record, her birthday was 6 July, and she was born at Clones, Monaghan, Ireland; her parents, James and Sarah Mills, were farmers. Mary Anne was a farm servant. Her age is transcribed as 23 in the immigration record, but the image could be 33, which is closer to age in her death record. The couple arrived childless.[1]

Mary Ann and Robert stayed in Sydney for a time before they accepted work with John Eales of Duckenfield. Robert was engaged as overseer on a station owned by Eales at Breeza, between Quirindi and Gunnedah.

After a few years, Robert and Mary Ann moved to Millers Forest on the lower Hunter. They had seven children who were mostly born at Millers Forest: Sarah, Robert, James William, Mary Ann, Thomas, Jane and Elizabeth.

The family moved to the Macleay River in 1862 where Robert took up one of the first selections at Bellimbopinni and Seven Oaks.

According to their death registrations, Mary Ann Hayes was ninety-seven years old when she died in 1900, and Robert was ninety-seven years old when he died in 1906 (however they could be younger according to their ages in the immigration record). They are both buried at Frederickton Cemetery, just north of Kempsey in New South Wales.

Mary Anne Hayes died on 28 October 1900: Age 97 ; Burial Roman Catholic at Frederickton New South Wales. "Born County Monachan, Ireland" is on her gravestone.[2][3]

Research Notes

Birth place Killeeven, County Monaghan in Clarkes in Australia website but Clones in immigration record. They are 6k apart.

(According to "Clarkes in Australia" - what is original source?) Mary Ann Mills, was born around 1803 in Killeeven, County Monaghan in Ireland. She lived there until girlhood when she accompanied her mother to London. After nine years there, she returned to Ireland where she married Robert Stephen Hayes in 1837. I will check the book "Clarkes in Australia : the families of Thomas and Ellen Clarke" by Eugenia Rauch, when the libraries re-open - Heather
