James Mills was born on October 5, 1790, in Elbert, Georgia, his father, Moses, was 43 and his mother, Keron, was 27. He married Nancy McMullan on December 12, 1815, in his hometown. They had eight children in 17 years. He died in 1853 in Jonesboro, Georgia, at the age of 63.
