Biography

Elizabeth Mills is the oldest known daughter of John and Mary Mills. She was 35 years old in the 1851 census which means she was born in 1826 or 1825.[1] [2]

Her family moved from Moncton to Shediac New Brunswick some time between 1827 and 1851.

At this time we do not know any more information about Elizabeth. Since she was unmarried and living at home in 1851 and 1861 (age 45), and her gravestone gives her name as Elizabeth Mills, there is a strong likelihood that she never married.

She died November 17, 1879 at the age of 63 and is buried in St. Martin's in the Wood Anglican Church Cemetery in Shediac, New Brunswick. [3]

Canadian Census, 1851

According to the Canadian census of 1851, the household of John Mills is located in Westmorland, sub-district Shediac.[4] The family includes:

Canada Census, 1861

According to the Canadian census of 1851, the household of John Mills changed considerably from 1851. They are still located in Westmorland, sub-district Shediac.[5] The family includes:

Name Sex Relationship Age Race Rank or Occupation Race and Where Religious Profession
John Mills Male Head 34 English Farmer Native Episcopalian
Harvey Mills Male Brother 27 English Farmer Native Episcopalian
Elizabeth Mills Female Daughter 45 English Lodger Native Episcopalian
John Mills Male Father 70 English Boarder Native Baptist

Note: the term "native" in this context refers to a person who was born and raised in this area.

Canadian Census, 1871

In the 1871 census, there is an Elizabeth Mills aged 55 living in the household of William and Amanda Welling. Both John and Harvey Mills were married by 1871 and it appears that Elizabeth went to live with her cousin William.[6]

Research Notes

It almost certain that Elizabeth never married. She was living with her cousin William at age 55 in 1871. If she did marry, there is no record of it and she was likely beyond child bearing years. Mills-4919 01:26, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
