Biography

James served in the War of 1812 as Col. of the First Ohio Militia, Third Detachment. He was an early pioneer of Darke County coming around 1816. Col. James Mills was of Irish descent. He emigrated from Berks Co. Pa & settled in Hamilton Co. OH. When the Col. started from the East he had three horses but found himself with nothing due to Indians or the duplicity of his agent. Col. James Mills family came by boat with James Boatman family and landed at Cincinnati. He then went to Hamilton and had a trading post. He served as the first representative from Darke County to the Ohio General Assembly on Dec. 4,1820, the 19th session and again on Dec.2,1822 the 21th session. He died at Fort Jefferson of Cholera and is buried with his family on land he first settled with several family members.
