Biography

He and his wife Fortune owned Tiptoe Plantation on the James River. He was involved in shipping pork and tobacco to London and Barbados. At some point his wife reported him “missing” and asked the court to handle his affairs. James Mills of Virginia appears in the records of Southampton and Huntington New York.

Aprill ye 6"' 1664. this ingadgeth mee James Mills of Pisquategue Bay in James River Virginia and my assinee to pay or caus to bee paid to Mr Jonas wood of Huntington or his assignees the full and just sum of six pounds and eaighteen..

In 1662, George Jordan and Mary Briggs witnessed James Mills' Bond to Mr. Robert Spencer. (Surry County Records, 1645-1672, p. 211). In 1664, Nathaniel Knight, Mary Briggs, and Jane Flood witnessed bond of James Mills relinquishing all right in the personal property of his wife, Fortune, or in the land and house formerly belonging to Col. John Flood; at the same time Fortune Mills and George Jordan relinquished any claim to the personal property of James Mills
