Note N1466From A Century of Living 1882-1982, contributed by J.C. Muirhead
William Wallace Mills, eldest son of William and Esther Mills, was born in Ulster and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1908. In 1910, the family moved to Hartney where Bill attended school. Bill was active in hockey, curling, and baseball, and was a good athlete. He left school before graduation, to work for the C.P.R. In the fall of 1923, he and a friend, Andy Mayes, went to California and found employment in the lumber mills in Northern California. He married Annabell Bates of Westwood in 1926. They had one daughter, Ruth, born June 7, 1928. Ruth married, but her husband died. Sometime later, she married Doug L. Crain. Ruth's daughters are: Danna, married to John Fox of Everett, Washington, with two sons; and Robyn, married to Mr. Grill, of Salem and Portland, Oregon.
Bill worked as equipment operator for various lumber companies, and as brakesman and conductor for the Southern Pacific Railway. Bill and Annabell built and operated a Donut and Delicatessen Shop close to the Susanville High School for twenty years. After retirement, they moved to Central Point, in Southern Oregon. After operating a small fruit and berry farm for some time they moved to a smaller holding near Brookings, Oregon, close to the ocean and California boundary. In 1944 they drove back to Hartney for the only visit in 60 years.
