Biography

Fanny was born in 31 Mar 1830 in Hamburg, Erie County, New York. She was the daughter of Abner Mills and Susan Eggleston and was born a twin with her brother Francis Merion Mills.

Fanny married at least three times. Her first husband was Daniel Judson. They were married 9 Oct 1849 in Erie County, New York, USA.[1] Fanny's sister Ruth Mills was married to Daniel's brother John Judson. In 1850, the newly married Fanny and Daniel are living in Hamburg, Erie, New York.[2] Their residence is just one door down from the residence of Daniel's sister Anna and her husband Ward Blood and near John Judson and Ruth Mills Judson. Daniel's occupation is listed as farmer.

In 1855, Fanny and Daniel are living in Hamburg with four children.[3] They had at least five children before his death in 1860.

  1. Esther Lovinia Judson who married William Newton
  2. Mariette Judson who married George W. Rulason
  3. William H. H. Judson
  4. George W. Judson
  5. Harriett L Judson who married William C. Thompson

In the 1860 census, Fanny is living alone with their four oldest children in Marilla, New York.[4] Her husband Daniel died in February of that year and their youngest child, Harriett, appears to have been born posthumously, in July 1860.

All of Fanny and Daniel's children eventually ended up in Michigan except George W. Judson who probably died in Buffalo, NY (wife listed as a widow in the 1910 Buffalo census).

According to Fanny's Find a Grave memorial,[1] after Daniel Judson died, she married Aaron Silloway and had three more children who all died young. No US census records for 1870 or New York State census records for 1865 yet found for Fanny or Aaron Silloway. In 1865, Fanny's eldest daughter Esther Lovinia is a servant in a household in Marilla, Erie County, New York. Her daughter Mariette and son George are living with her parents Abner and Susan Mills.

In 1875, Fanny and Aaron Silloway are living in Marilla, Erie County, New York with her youngest child Harriett and Aaron's son Marshall Silloway.[5] Aaron had at least three children with his first wife Margaret Miller. It is possible that the "three more children" mentioned above were actually Aaron's children from his first marriage.

Fanny and Aaron may have divorced as both are found separately in 1880. It is also possible that they were never married. A 1880 US Census record for a Fanny Judson born 1830 in New York may be Fanny Mills Jusdon. This record shows her as widowed and working as a servant.[6] In 1880, Aaron Silloway is living in Greenfield, Erie County, Pennsylvania with his son Marshall Silloway and Marshall's wife Ashia Hadley Silloway. He is listed as a widower.[7]

At some point she moved to Michigan and in 1893 she married William Aldrich in Mecosta County, Michigan.[8] Although the Michigan records provide for names of the couples' parents, Fanny's are listed as unknown, she did not provide her maiden name, and lists no previous marriages. Fanny and William Aldrich are found in Hinton Township, Mecosta County, Michigan in the 1900 census[9] and 1910 census.[10] Both these census records provide information on the number of children born and children living. In 1900, Fanny reported seven children born and three living; in 1910, she reported five children born and four living. Perhaps the 1900 census includes children she may have had with Aaron Silloway; the 1910 census most likely refers only to the children born in her marriage to Daniel Judson.

Fanny apparently came to visit or live with her daughter Hattie sometime after 1910 because she died in Clayton Township, Arenac, Michigan, and was buried there in 1912.[1] [11] Her Michigan death record includes the names of her parents: Abner Mills and Susan.
