Mary Ann Mills was born in 1865 at Ablington [a tithing in Bibury] in Gloucestershire, the daughter of Elijah Mills and his wife Sarah, born Sarah Mander ^{[1] [2]}.

In 1871, Mary Ann was living in London Street in Fairford in Gloucestershire with her parents (Elija and Sarah) and their other children. Her age was given as 5, implying a birth date in 1865 or 1866. Her birthplace was given as Ablington, Gloucestershire. She was at school ^[2].
