Biography

Thomas Milly dit LaCroix, was born at Plaisance, Newfoundland in 1694. He was the son of Doctor Jean Milly[1] and Marie Madeleine Aubert who were born in La Rochelle, France.[citation needed]

" ... Francois Milly immigrated with his brothers, Jean, dit La Croix, Thomas , and Gaspard, to Louisbourg, lIe Royale (Cape Breton Island), around 1714. ... In 1719 Franqois and his brothers held their property in common; it consisted of fishing establishments on the north side of Louisbourg harbour, on the Rue du Quay and the Rue Dauphin in Louisbourg, and at Saint-Esprit. ... In 1727 the brothers divided their property among themselves with Franqois retaining the establishment to the north of Louisbourg. ... "[2]

Louisbourg after their father's death, a home on the north shore, another at the Barrackois of the Holy Spirit, and Lot E of Block 4. The north-east side of the Block 4 property belonged to Jean and Gaspard Milly, while the south-west side of the lot belonged to Francois and Thomas Milly. In 1727 the brothers changed this arrangement, giving Thomas and Gaspard Milly full control of Lot E in return for the transfer of other family land to Francois and Jean Milly. By the terms of the agreement Thomas Millly owned the west side of the lot with 25 feet of frontage on Quay Street and Gaspard Milly owned the east side of the lot with 20 feet of frontage on Quay Street [NOTE 325].

Thomas died in February 22, 1733[1], shortly before Marguerite was born on July 13, 1733. Her four brothers and one sister were all born at Louisburg, Cape Breton but some records say Marguerite was born at Marblehead. Her mother, Louise Marguerite Dupuis was born at Plaisance, Newfoundland in 1704. She later married Jean Baptiste Laborde , while living at Marblehead. [m. 1734, Jean la Borde at Louisburg *]

Thomas Milly died in 1733, leaving his lot to Louise Dupuy [NOTE 326]. She and her second husband Jean Laborde, when they built a house [PAGE 90:] on Lot E measuring 45 feet along Rue du Quay [NOTE 327]. There is no evidence that Milly ever lived on Block 4 after 1727. Lot E was returned to the Labordes after the first English occupation, and they retained it until the second siege [NOTE 328] During the second English occupation William Phipps owned the lot [NOTE 329].
