Biography

Janet Milne's father was James, a weaver in Glasbanny, somewhere near Errol[1]. No mother is shown. A James Milne is shown as father to two daughters born in Errol five years apart, Agnes and Janet[1].

Thus, James' wife's mother may have been Agnes and James' mother may have been Janet. There is found just one likely entry, James christened to Jannet Mitchal and Thomas Miln in 1729 at Kinnaird by Errol, just 6 km north of Errol. Although this James was perhaps only 19 when Agnes was christened, the location and the mother's first name seem to make the connection at least plausible. And no other record found comes even close.

Confirming a connection to the Mitchell lineage in Kinnaird could extend our ancestry in Perthshire back to the mid-16th century, as there exists a continuous record of this lineage back to 1562.

A connection to Kinnaird also seems likely after reading g- grandson John McLean Beatts' discussion of Kinnaird Castle in his book, 'A History of Dundee'. The proprietor at one time was Sir John Murray Thriepland, who carefully repaired the castle after it had been allowed to fall into decay. That a connection existed between the McLeans and Sir John is suggested by the name of John M. Beatts sixth child, Murray Threpland Beatts.

In his book, John describes a pleasant day's excursion from Dundee to the area of Kinnaird. Climbing to King's Seat, elevation 1200 feet, he describes a 360 degree view of the entire Firth of Tay and of the Grampian mountains to the north. Descending, one views the Hill of Dunsinnane made famous in Macbeth before reaching the Carse of Gowrie and arriving at Kinnaird Castle.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
