Ethel was born in 1880[1] in Skirpenbeck, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her family in 1881[2] and 1891.
[3] At the time of the 1901 census, Ethel worked at Ash Grove in Haxby, Yorkshire, as a "lady's help" to Constance Marian ANGOVE, the wife of a surgeon and physician.

Ethel married Arthur George NELSON in 1902.[5][6] In 1911 the family lived with Arthur's mother on the Market Place. Arthur assisted with his mother's boot dealing business.[7]
