William was born in 1839 in North Carolina.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company I of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[1] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 24 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 28 April 1863 from Columbus, Ohio. He was wounded in action - a gunshot wound to the chest - on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, and discharged 25 February 1864 in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island.[2]
He re-enlisted with the 27th United States Colored Troops (USCT.)
He passed away in 1912 and is buried at Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville, Ohio.
