Thomas Minchin was born on 1 February 1878 in Fiji. He was the son of Thomas Minchin and Zara Guinness.
His family had spent 9 years in Fiji trying to establish a cotton plantation, unsuccessfully. Thomas was born while the family were awaiting a ship to take them back to New Zealand.
The family settled firstly in Auckland, New Zealand and then in the Hokianga in Northland, where his father was a school teacher. His mother died in 1883.
He married Gertrude Mary Cooke Yarborough in 1901:
Thomas and Gertrude embarked on their honeymoon to South Africa, where they were to try farming. Thomas's brother Paul happened to be there at the time. Conditions proved too difficult and they returned to New Zealand to farm in their familiar Northland.
They had three sons whilst living in South Africa; Arthur, Henry and Alfred .
The 1914 New Zealand Electoral Rolls and the Hokianga Cleaves Directory dated 1915 lists Thomas Minchin as a Farmer in Broadwood, Hokianga County (214 miles North of Auckland by steamer).
His wife died in 1947.
Thomas died on 1 February 1960 at age 82 at Rawene, Hokianga, Northland, New Zealand.
