John Minchin B.A. M.A. was born in Hampshire, England.

John Champneys Minchin was born 15 July 1800 and was baptised on 20 September 1800 at South Stoneham, Hampshire, England [1]. He was the third child of Henry Minchin and Elizabeth Guitton.

He grew up with his parents and siblings at Holywell, Soberton, Hampshire.

His mother Elizabeth died in 1813. His father remarried, twice.

John was educated at Winchester College and then New College Oxford. He graduated B.A. and M.A. By the age of 27 he had been ordained a Priest in the Church of England.

He married Ellen Osborne (the daughter of Thomas Osborne) on 3 July 1832 at Bath, St. Michael, Somerset, by Licence. The witnesses were Henry Hanson Simpson and Harriet Lowry.

Morning Post dated 5 July 1832, page 4:
MARRIED— On Tuesday, the 3d inst., at St. Michael's, Bath, the Rev. Champneys Minchin, to Ellen Elizabeth, only daughter of Thomas Osborne, Esq.[2]

They had the following children:

  2. Eliza Caroline Amelia Minchin (b. 14 Jul 1838)
  3. Maria Frederica Minchin (b. 17 Sep 1840, d. 6 Feb 1913)
  4. Isabella Lucy Minchin (b. 31 Aug 1842, d. 1847)
  5. Julia Minchin (b. 5 Jul 1844, d. 17 Apr 1926)

He served in two of Sir Christopher Wren's churches, firstly in 1837 at St. Mildreds, London and then in 1872 at St. Olave's Jewry in London.

In 1871 he inherited the title of Lord of the Manor of Holywell House.

His wife Ellen died in 1879.

He passed away on 22 January 1880[3]. He was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery (Kensington And Chelsea)[4].

London Evening Standard 24 January 1880, page 1:
MINCHIN.- Jan. 22, suddenly, at 17, Addison-road north, Notting-hill, the Rev. John Champneys Minchin, rector of St Olave's, Jewry, aged 79.[5]

After his death, the lordship of Holywell passed to his nephew Falkiner John Minchin of Ireland (the Reverend John only having produced daughters).

His will was proved in March 1881 at the Principal Registry to his daughters Eliza Caroline Minchin and Maria Frederica Minchin[6]. Effects:
