Mihaly was born in as son of servant(s) (szolga) Mihaly Minda and Piroska Kisz. His godparents were commoners (köznépi) Gabor Kapusi and Katalin Toth.[1]
On 18 October 1903 he got married to Elisabeth Modra (* 18 March 1885 in Medwesch as daughter of Paul Modra and Elisabeth Nemeth) in Gilad. Witnesses were Stefan Groß(?) and Georg Bercse. The latter would also witness the wedding of Mihaly's sister Julianna some months later. Mihaly back then was a a coachman or teamster at Puszta Karoly in Partos/Banloc, just like Julianna's husband Alexander Meszecsov.[2]
On 15 April 1914 Mihaly and his wife boarded the ship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in Bremen[3] and arrived in New York on 22 April 1914.[4] On the ship there were at least 15 more people from Bánlak, including Mihaly's sister Julianna and her husband as well as his sister in law Eva Minda (travelling to her husband Antal in Cleveland) plus some more from close places like Omor and Modos.[5]
