Biography

Elnathan (Miner) Minor was born in Connecticut.

Miner/Minor Lineage: Elnathan, Manassah, Thomas [immigrant], Clement, William of Chew Magna[1][2]

Elnathan Miner (alias Minor), the third son of Manassah Miner and Lydia Moore was born say 1673 at New London, Connecticut Colony. It is likely that his parents had twin sons named Elnathan (1671-1673) and Christopher (1671-1683) both born at New London, Connecticut Colony. The Elnathan Minor of this profile was born 1673 at New London, Connecticut Colony. The 1671 birth record is probably that of his older brother named Elnathan, who died in 1673. [See Research Note]. The Genealogy of the Chesebrough Family lists the birthdate of the Elnathan Miner of this profile as 28 December 1673.[3]

Elnathan's father was a Deacon and Town Clerk of Stonington, Connecticut.[4]Elnathan was a lieutenant in the militia and held several offices in Stonington, including that of Town Clerk for 27 years.

Elnathan was married three times. His first wife was Rebeckah Baldwin (alias Rebecca), daughter of John and Rebecca (Palmer) Baldwin on 21 Mar 1694 by Capt. Samuel Mason, Asst., at Stonington, New London, Connecticut Colony.[5][6]He and Rebecca had four children born at Stonington[7]:

  1. Samuel Minor [sic] (b. 12 Dec 1694; d. 25 Jan 1791),[8] m. 3 Dec 1719 at Stonington, CT, Elizabeth Brown (1697-1788)
  2. Manassah Minor [sic] (b. 1 Dec 1696; d. 27 Jul 1750),[9] m. 9 Jun 1726 at Voluntown, CT, Keziah Geer (1710-1737)
  3. Elnathan Minor [sic] (b. 24 Jan 1696; d. 1758),[10]
  4. Rebecca Minor [sic] (b. 13 Feb 1698),[11] m. 16 Jan 1718 at Stonington, CT, Robert Lippincott (1697-1718)

Rebecca (Baldwin) Minor died on 12 March 1701 in her 28th year at Stonington.

Elnathan married 2) Prudence Richardson, daughter of Amos and Mary (Smith) Richardson on 17 March 1703 at Stonington, Connecticut Colony.[12] This was the second marriage for Prudence Richardson. She married 1) John Hallam (1662-1700) on 15 March 1683 at Stonington, Connecticut.[13]She is listed as 'Prudence Hallam' on the marriage record to Elnathan Minor [sic]. He and Prudence had one son born at Stonington:

  1. Richardson Minor [sic] (b. 24 Nov 1704),[14]

Prudence (Richardson) Hallam-Minor died on 6 August 1716 at Stonington.[15]

Elnathan, a widower for the second time, married 3) Tamzen Wilcox on 14 October 1718 at Stonington, Connecticut Colony by Capt. John Babcock.[16]He and Tamzen had one son born at Stonington:

  1. Daniel Minor (b. say 1719).

Tamzen (Wilcox) Minor died say 1719, likely in childbirth. There is no further information about this wife or son other than her marriage record, and listing in Find-a-Grave.

Elnathan Miner died on 11 October 1756 at Stonington, Connecticut.[17][18]He and his wives are buried in the Thomas Miner Cemetery at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. He ( and his wives) has two separate Find-a-Grave listings [see Research Note]:[19][20]

Research Notes

  • This Elnathan Miner/Minor was likely a third son born 28 December 1673 based on the Chesebrough Family genealogy. The Genealogy of the Chesebrough Family lists the birthdate of the Elnathan Miner of this profile as 28 December 1673.[21]Based on various records, it appears that Manassah and Lydia (Moore) Baldwin had twin sons born in 1671. They were Elnathan (1671-1673) and Christopher (1671-1683) both born at New London, Connecticut Colony. The subject of this profile was likely named Elnathan following the death of his elder brother. The 5 October 1671 birth record and 10 March 1672 christening record for Elnathan the elder son is likely conflated with the birth information for the surviving Elnathan. For these reasons, the birth date for the Elnathan Miner/Minor of this profile has been changed to 28 December 1673 and Find-A-Grave has been contacted to request a change on their profile.
  • There are two Find-A-Grave profiles for Elnathan MINER/MINOR and both list the same wives. The first profile for Lieut Elnathan Minor Sr. was established on 29 April 2010.[22]The second profile for Lieut Elnathan Miner was established 16 September 2011.[23]Find-A-Grave was contacted on 6 March 2021 and apprised of the duplicate profile for this person.
