Sarah Pearl Miner was born in 1880, the daughter of DeForest Miner and his second wife Diana Waterman.[1] As a newborn, she was captured on the 1880 census in Jay, VT with her family.[2] After the death of her mother, when she was just 5 years old, Sarah was taken to live with her mother's sister, Mrs. Emma (Waterman) Porter of Coventry, VT. She was recorded (as "Sarah Porter") living with the Porter's in Coventry, VT when the 1900 census was taken.[3]
On 10 Jan. 1906, Sarah was married at Newport, VT to Verne Cleveland Aiken.[4] The couple spent their first year of marriage living and farming in Coventry, VT, then moved to St. Johnsbury. Sarah and Verne had five children, the first born in Coventry, VT and the rest in St, Johnsbury, VT:
This family was living in St. Johnsbury, VT when the 1910,[5] 1920,[6] 1930[7] and 1940[8] censuses were taken. They lived on Mt. Vernon Street.
Sarah lost her husband when Verne passed away of heart disease at their home in 1945, at age 60, after a long and painful illness. Sarah continued to live at their home, until their daughter Doris died in 1951. Doris had polio as a child and needed continuous care her whole life. After 1951, Sarah moved to Sheffield, VT to be near her son Paul.
Sarah passed away of heart disease in 1955, at the age of 74, after a short illness.[9] She was buried with her husband in Saint Johnsbury Center Cemetery, in St. Johnsbury, VT.[10] The attached Obituary was published at the time.[11]
