Note NI128According to Myrtle Coots, in a telephone conversation with Larry Houlgate on June 20, 1993, Nellie Miner was always running off with other men during her marriage with Joshua Houlgate. After their divorce, she married three or four more times before she died. Joshua told Myrtle that she would bring her husbands to visit him in Pasadena at Christmas time. On one occasion she brought two husbands with her to visit Joshua. Myrtle said that Nellie was a very beautiful woman, and she served "as a concubine" to other men between her marriages.

Note from David Watkins: I went to Nebraska and found the same records on Nellie. I think my great grand father George must have met Nellie in Bertrand and they married there. George and his brother Morris had moved to the area south of Bertrand a few years before and homesteaded. Shortly after my grand father was born the family moved to Washington, leaving Morris (George's brother) behind. The marriage didn't last long and George went back to Nebraska to live with his brother. After Morris (George's brother) died in 1932, George came out to California and visited Nellie. I've attached pictures of him with Nellie and my grandfather. George died in 1937 and being too poor to pay for a funeral he was cremated at the LA County Crematory.

There seems to be a lot of agreement on Nellie being a somewhat wild woman. My grandmother said Nellie "was always asking for money". I'm not sure why George left her but I think it may be due to her relationship with Perrian Prescott who was one of those lovers and possibly the father of two children (one for sure). She was pregnant with his child (Paul Perrian) when he was shot and killed for tresspassing. At the same time he was married and had four children by his wife.

Nellie married Christian Brow less than a year later, who adopted the baby.

My grandfather thought his brother Perrie was actually the son of Perrian Prescott too, but we may never know for sure. He always kept the Watkins name.
