Biography

Stephen married his cousin, Ann Minor, in either Fayette Co, or Greene Co, PA circa 1808. They then traveled west where Stephen was one of the early settlers of Butler Co, OH. [1] As all his children were born in Ohio, it would seem logical that he was there circa 1809. Stephen was a sergeant under Trimble's Mtd Reg Ohio Vols and Mil during the War of 1812.[2]

In 1813, Stephen Minor was appointed collector for the University of Miami.[3]

Land was set aside for the university and held in trust by the Legislature, which, in 1810, enacted a law directing the "lots to be disposed of on leases for ninety-nine years, renewable forever, at the rate of six per cent per annum on the purchase-money, to be paid annually." Stephen's job was to collect the unpaid rents. There were several ordinances in effect for this job. [4]

Notes from the account books of Miami University shows that not only was Stephen the collector but he also provided stone for a new building on the campus. [5].

In 1817, Stephen was a subscriber to the Oxford Public Library.[6]

Stephen Minor was listed on the 1820 Butler Co, OH census with 2m under 10, 1m 10-16, 1m 16-18, 1m 16-26, 1m 26-45, 2f under 10, 3f 10-16, 1f 16-26, 1f 26-45. Personal property tax lists shows that Stephen was on the 1825-1833 lists for Oxford Twp, Butler Co, OH [7] Stephen's family consisted of 2 m 5/10, 1m 10/15, 1m 15/20, 2m 20/30, 1m 50/60, 1f under 5, 2f 10/15, 2f 15/20, 3f 20/30, 1f 40/50 on the 1830 Butler Co, OH census. Quite the family!

Circa 1833, the Minor family moved to Ripley Twp, Montgomery Co, IN. In 1836, Stephen was the executor for Hiram Albertson's will. [8]

By 1840, Stephen had 2m 15/20, 1m 60/70, 1f 15/20, 1f 20/30, 1f 30/40, and 1f 50/60 in his household in Montgomery Co, IN. One son, Alfred, was living next door. In 1841 Stephen acted as guardian for these two youngest boys so that they could receive their inheritance from their grandfather, John Minor, who died in Greene Co, PA.[9] Sometime between 1841 and 1850 Stephen Minor died.
