Biography

Adeline Mison was born on 7 OCT 1868, and her birth was registered at Kiama.^[1] She was the daughter of Ephraim Mison and Ann Bloomfield.

She married John Henry Thurgate in Milton, NSW, in 1892.^[2] They had at least 3 sons and 3 daughters together.

She died in hospital at Lismore on Friday the 1st of October, 1943,^[3][4] and was buried in the Presbyterian portion of the East Ballina Cemetery.^[5]

BALLINA, Sunday - The funeral of Mrs. Adeline Thurgate, of Wardell, who died on Friday afternoon at a private hospital in Lismore after a brief illness, took place yesterday from the Presbyterian Church, Ballina, to the Presbyterian portion of East Ballina cemetery.

The late Mrs. Thurgate was born at Milton, South Coast, 75 years ago, and was married to John Henry Thurgate, who predeceased her nine years ago. Prior to coming to reside at Wardell 17 years ago she had lived for a number of years at Nashua. She is survived by two sons and three daughters. One son predeceased her. The sons are John Ernest (Wardell) and William (Ballina). The daughters are Mesdames A.M. Napper (Nashua), N.V. Broadman (Carool, Tweed River), J. J. Walker (Goolmangar), F. Whyte (Pimlico), and G. Simpson (Wardell).

The service at the church, which was conducted by the Rev. F. Beeson, assisted by the Rev. A. S. Brooks, was largely attended, and many wreaths covered the coffin. During the service the Rev. Brooks said the name Thurgate was closely associated with the history of the Richmond River. Speaking as one who had been closely associated with the family in their joys and sorrows, he could say there was no more highly respected name in the district. Mrs. Thurgate was a noble woman, with a wonderfully quiet nature, patient sincerity and an ardent devotion in religious affairs. The pall-bearers were Messrs. J. Thurgate, W. Thurgate (sons), J. Walker, A. M. Napper (sons-in-law), O. Mison (nephew), and F. Hilder. Wreath-bearers were Messrs. P. Johnson, L. Johnson, and S. Cook. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Charles Henderson, Ballina.
