George was born in 1914. He was the son of Ernest Mitchell and Mele Mataele.
George arrived in New Zealand from Rarotonga in 1929 to attend the Fielding Agricultural High School, where he first learned to play rugby.
He married Louise Ivy Guttenbeil in 1939. They had no children.
He played Rugby League for Richmond Rovers and joined Ponsonby Rugby League team in 1944 until his retirement in 1947 (he worked on the Wharf.) He became the first Rarotongan Islander to represent New Zealand being selected in the 1939 Kiwi Rugby League Team for their tour of England. He also represented the NZ Maori team against Australia in 1937.
His wife died in 1984.
George passed away in 1986 at the age of 71.
He was inducted (after his death) in 2008 into the Samoan Sports Hall of Fame for services to Rugby League in New Zealand.
