Biography

Jacob Mitchell came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Jacob Mitchell and his family came from the United KIngdom in the 1840s to settle in the new British Colony of South Australia. The family farmed wheat in the Bugle Ranges near Mount Barker, a rural outpost[1]

Maud Davis, a grandaughter of Jacob Mitchell, told a newpaper journalist she was
born at Bugle Ranges on July 12th 1871, and her grandfather Jacob Mitchell was one of the earliest settlers in that portion of the Hills. He, and his wife Alice, came from Southampton, England, in the sailing ship "Piatiers" (probably Poictiers 1848) in 1842. Her father, Joseph Mitchell, was the only son, and was but four years of age when he arrived with his parents from the Old Country. ... my grandfather settled at Bugle Ranges. He had a small block on which he grew wheat. He had some bullocks, and used to cart wheat from Bugle Ranges to Adelaide for the farmers of the district, and father used to help him when only seven years of age. They had to pay a toll tax in those days for bullock wagons and other vehicles, and the little square toll house near Glen Osmond still exists, and is one of Adelaide's land marks of the early days [2]

Children of Jacob and Alice were:

Elizabeth
Joseph
Annie
Sarah born in South Australia 1850
