William was born about 1806[1] at Cruden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland[2]. He was the son of John Mitchell and Margaret Mutch[1].
On the 23rd July 1835, compeared also Janet Dickie, unmarried, in the village of Longside, and acknowledged herself with child, accusing Wm. Mitchell, unmarried, presently at Nether Savock, as the father thereof. Said Wm. Mitchell was also present and acknowledged the truth of the accusation. Both parties were suitably exhorted to repentance, and having paid the usual penalty, were dismissed from the scandal[3].
In 1835, William had an illegitimate daughter, Barbara, by Janet Dickie.
On the 20th March 1836, Janet Dickie gave evidence at the Kirk session when Elspet Ellis was compeared. Janet Dickie appeared in person to testify that she was a fellow servant of Elspet Ellis and that Alexander Smith had frequently come to her master's house at late hours. The same testimony was confirmed by a letter from Wm. Mitchell, likewise a servant at Nether Savock[4].
On the 16th October 1836, compeared Isobel Robb, unmarried, presently at Fetterangus, but lately at Nether Savock in this parish (Longside) and acknowledged herself with child and accused Wm. Mitchel and unmarried residing at Nether Savock as the father thereof. The said Wm. Mitchel likewise appeared and acknowledged the guilt of fornication with Isobel Robb but refused at present to acknowledge himself the father of the child. They were both seriously rebuked, exhorted to repentance, and (he having paid to the poor a penalty of £1 for himself, she having promised to pay her penalty of 10s soon) they were both dismissed from the scandal[5][6]
In 1837, he appears to have a daughter named Elspet (living with Janet and Barbara in 1841) however the mother of Elspet Mitchel appears to be Isabella Robb*.
On the 18th July 1840, William Mitchell married Janet Dickie at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
William's wife Janet died aged 32 years in 1841 at Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland[7]
William Mitchell married Ann Greig on the 30th December 1843 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[8].
In 1851, William Mitchel was living at Upper Savock, Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with his second wife Ann Mitchell (nee Greig), and daughters Barbara (daughter of William Mitchell & Janet Dickie) and Elspet Mitchell (daughter of William Mitchell & Isabella Robb)[2].
William Mitchell, crofter (married to Ann Greig) passed away aged 74 years on the 4th October 1880 at Savock, Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Son of John Mitchell (Farmer, deceased) and Margaret Mitchell M(aiden) S(urname) Mutch (deceased). Informant: Jane Mitchell (daughter)[1]

Further research is needed into his daughter Elspet Mitchel. An Isabel Robb died in 1837 in the Strichen Registration district of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Isabel(la)'s death would explain why Janet Mitchell nee Dickie had both Barbara and Elspet(h) with her in 1841.
