The 1850 census has him born in England and currently at age 43 living in Sheffield, Caledonia, Vermont and working as a farmer. (I couldn't attach this one to the Ancestry.com page for some reason).^[5]

In 1860, 53 year old Solomon is listed with his wife and children as living in Sheffield, Caledonia, Vermont:

Solomon served in the Union Army, as a Private in the Vermont 10th Regiment, Vermont Infantry, Company A.^[7] He is listed in the US General Index to Pensions for his service.^[8]

The 1870 census was transcribed as "Salena" Mitchell but clearly says Solomon (62) in Sheffield, Caledonia, Vermont.

The 1880 census has "Soliman" Mitchell (74) living in Sheffield, Caledonia, Vermont and working as a farmer with Hannah (71) and Leondard N. (24)?^[9]

He was an 85 year old farmer who died from Pneumonia on 08 Jan 1892.^[10] see Research notes below, "Parish records the baptism of a solomon Mitchell at Great Wishford, 4 May 1806, his parents being Henry and Elizabeth mitchell." He is listed in the Find A Grave Database, Find A Grave: Memorial #176331087 Sutton Village Cemetery, Sutton, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA. An Obituary is posted to the memorial which states he and his wife both died of pneumonia just 3 days apart.

"I am the online-parish clerk for Great Wishford (Great Wishford is a village and civil parish in the Wylye Valley in Wiltshire, England), part of the Wiltshire OPC project, and I think that Solomon Mitchell was baptised in Great Wishford, which is the village next to South Newton. ( not in Alton, Hampshire)

Parish records the baptism of a solomon Mitchell at Great Wishford, 4 may 1806, his parents being Henry and Elizabeth mitchell. Hannah was baptised at south Newton a year later, July 27 1807, parents, lazarus and Sarah west.

They must have emigrated to Vermont from England some time after 1836, as ther is a baptism of three of their children at Great Wishford , Sarah the last one being baptised October 1836.

He was in the civil war, source: St. Albans Daily Messenger Jan. 21, 1892 Solomon Mitchell, of Sutton, died January 8, aged 85 years. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted at the age of 56 and served until discharged because of disability for which he drew a pension.

Solomon Mitchell and his wife Hannah West, were buried in the village cemetery, at Sutton Vermont. and there is a photo of their grave stone . you will find it if you search his name and vermont. Regards maureen Withey
