THOMAS MITCHELL was born around 1768 in Randolph County North Carolina, according to a news article in the Lawrence County, Tennessee newspaper (April 9, 1986). He married Sarah Lancaster daughter of Joseph Lancaster. He was listed as one of the earliest settlers of Lawrence County, Tennessee based on his name being in an 1815 Tax list and on the 1820 census of Lawrence County Tennessee.
The news article states that Thomas came with his family, to Lawrence County, Tennessee from North Carolina, in a wagon. The GoodSpeed history of Lawrence County Tennessee reads that first settlements in Lawrence County Tennessee were along the Big Buffalo River near Pennington's old Mill the Columbia and Wayne Turnpike around 1815. Some of the First permanent settlers were; John Voss, William Voss, C. Hutchinson, Jesse Hutchinson and Thomas Mitchell.
John Mitchell is #536 and Thomas Mitchell is #538 on and 1826 Lawrence County Tennessee tax list. At #522 is Tennessee Hutcherson, #523 is Jessee Hutcherson and #524 is David Hutcherson. The Mitchells and Hutcheson families live in and around each other for numerous years. The Hutcherson family also uses Hutcheson and Hutchison from time to time.
An 1836 Lawrence County Tennessee tax list shows Thomas J Mitchell and Griffith Mitchell at #31 and Jessee Hutcherson at #20.
An 1848 Lawrence County Tennessee Land Deed (#18876) shows Thomas and Griffin Mitchell obtaining twohundred fiftynine acres of land that adjoins Jessee Hutcherson's land several times. It was dated 9 Jun 1848. Land Deed # 18877 is for a neighbor but shows the land adjoinng Griffith Mitchell's land.
Several Eastern Cherokee Applications filed by grandchildren list him as one quarter blood cherokee and a North Carolina native. The applications were all declined because of failure to register. They are; #34225 filed by Phoebe (Hutcheson) Hubbard, #32140 filed by William Ragsdale and #31644 filed by Joseph Leroy Hutcheson. Some state that Thomas adopted a lot of indian children throughout the years. Thomas died about 1853 according to William Hutchesons application. Thomas was living with William R. Hutcheson at the time of his death.
He passed away in 1853.
