Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1588 in West Riding, Yorkshire, England. Her parents were John Mitchell and Tryphenia Buckland.

The baptism at Halifax, Yorkshire, on 7 January 1587/1588, shows - "Elisabeth fil. Joh'nis Mychell de Hipor." = Elisabeth daughter of John Mitchell of Hipperholme.^[1]

Abel Greenwood and Elizabeth Mitchell had a daughter Mary baptised in Heptonstall 1 June 1601 but they were not married; the mother's name was not shown in the register at this time unless it was an illegitimate birth.^[2] Mary would probably be known as Mary Mitchell.

Research Notes

Notes on looking for sources - Baptism - added baptism source for date given, but Hipperholme is about 12 miles away from Heptonstall where Abel was born, and Elizabeth Mitchell is a very common name. It is possible that Elizabeth may have been born at Heptonstall as the parish registers are lost before 1593.

Marriage - could not find any evidence of a marriage to Abel Greenwood in Reading, Berkshire in 1601. It is over 210 miles away and she would only have been 13 years old. It is shown on an Ancestry family tree, but no source and the husband is shown as William Stevens. Could not find a marriage to Abel Greenwood on Ancestry, FamilySearch or Find my Past. There is a marriage 23 June 1606 in Halifax to William Walker^[3] which would be the most likely one for this baptism but there are several others in surrounding areas.

Daughter Ann attached here is said to be baptised 13 October 1616 at Ilkley but the baptism record shows father Matthew Greenwood of Middleton, Ilkley.^[4] Several Ancestry trees show "Abel Matthew Greenwood" but this is two different people; two forenames were not given in this area at that time. Son Thomas is said to be baptised at Heptonstall 26 February 1610, son of Abel, but I could not see a baptism near this date in the Ancestry scans for 1609/1610 or 1610/1611.
