Stephen was born in 1840 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. On the 1861 Census he was a boarder and described as a Paxian(?) Artist. In 1871, he was an oculist's assistant living at 5 Grt George St, Leeds. Census records for Stephen after 1881 have not been located, but his wife is noted to be married in 1881 and 1891.
Research Notes: Appears to have separated from wife after 1871. She appears to have stayed in Leeds. Census data for 1881 and 1891 not found. Probably died late 1901 or 1902, registered 1902. No Church record. 1901 census stated he was single, but it is known that he had been married. 1901 census locale same as birth, Dale Hall but lists him as a hairdresser, not barber. No other known candidates vying for this curious string of evidence. The long separation, lack of divorce, move back to the town of his birth, and adoption of a non traditional occupation raises interesting questions.
