Biography

Jean was born in about 1823 to James Mitchell and Grace Calder.

"James Mitchell was born in Polmont, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and married Grisell Calder. They had eleven children -- Andrew, David, James, William, John, Elizabeth, Jean, Agnes, Alexander, Robert and Peter. In 1835 the two oldest sons sailed for Canada, landed at York, and took up land in Vaughan. Two years later the parents followed with the remaining nine, the baby, Peter, then being 2 years old. There was considerable excitement when, just as they were about to land, son John, a teenager, fell into the water; fortunately he was rescued and all landed safely. James was a joiner and builder by trade and built at least four comfortable log homes for his family, including the furniture, which was mostly of cherry and maple. Andrew, a bachelor, farmed the 200 acres at Edgeley, including Lot 7, East part of Concession 5. Another son, Robert, married Helen [sic] Bryson. Their son, Peter, a bachelor, and later another son, James, lived on this farm at Edgeley. James married Lavina Devins. Their son, Robert married Dorothy Cousins, and continued on the farm until Robert became manager of Woodbridge Farmers and sold the farm and moved to Woodbridge in 1938." [1]
