Elizabeth (Mitchell) Wren was born in Chatham, Kent, England.

Birth

Elizabeth Mitchell was christened 29 September 1799 at St Mary's Parish Church in Chatham[1]. The census records do confirm that she was born about 1799 in Chatham.

Residences

  • Elizabeth was born and christened in Chatham, Kent and married Thomas Wren in Rochester, Kent on 4 Jun 1815, aged 16, at St Margaret's Parish Church[2].
  • She continued to live in Chatham to at least 1838 before moving to Gillingham, Kent.
  • She lived at Cage Lane in Gillingham during the 1841 census[3] with Thomas and their 6 children. Her mother, Sarah Mitchell, was also living with them.
  • Elizabeth, Thomas and their 6 children were living at Hards Town in Gillingham during the 1851 census[4].
  • Elizabeth, Thomas, 1 of their children and 2 grandchildren lived at Upper Street, Hards Town in Gillingham, Kent during the 1861 census[5].
  • Elizabeth continued to live at Hards Town in Gillingham until Thomas's death in 1867.
  • Elizabeth moved in with her daughter, Ann Butler (widow), and son at 8 Union Street in Chatham, Kent during the 1871 census[6]. Her widowed daughter, Eliza Mantell, and 2 children are living at 8 Union Street.
  • Elizabeth died at 5 King Street in Chatham[7].

Death

Elizabeth died 17 June 1879 at 5 King Street in Chatham, Kent[7]. The cause of death was recorded as Strangulated Hernia (no operation) and the informant was Celia Price, Daughter, of 34 Victoria Street, Gillingham who was present at the death. Her occupation was given as "Widow of Thomas Wren, Carpenter".

Burial

Elizabeth was buried 22 June 1879 at Chatham Maidstone Road Cemetery in plot X, 810[21].

Research Notes

There are 2 Elizabeth Mitchells who were baptised in 1799 in Chatham but the 1841 census gives her mother, Sarah Mitchell, as resident in their household.

All the census records and the death certificate give the year that she was born as 1801 but this would mean she was 14 when she married in 1815. No baptism record in Chatham has been found for Elizabeth Mitchell in 1801.
