John was born in 1847 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His parents moved to the north of Ireland when he was still young. [1]
His father Alexander came to New Zealand around 1863 under the NZ & Australian Land Company, arriving at Bluff aboard the Thomas Edward Millege. [1]
On 1 March 1867 at the house of Mr. Alexander Mitchell, Morton Mains, he married Marjory McIntosh, 3rd daughter of Mr. McIntosh, Morayshire. Alexander was the second son. [2] [3]
Around 1894 he opened the Invercargill Horse Saleyards; he was the auctioneer. He was also Mayor of East Invercargill for 16 or 17 years and held various other political posts. He was a Freemason and an Oddfellow. [1]
He passed away 1 December 1910 age 63 and is buried at Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill. [1] [4]
In 1946 a painting The Schoolgirl by Grace Joel, a Dunedin artist, was donated to the art gallery in Invercargill, in memory of John and Marjory. [5]
