Biography

John Mitchell was baptised on 4 May 1763 in "Dawston, Lancashire, England." He was the son of Thomas Mitchell and Jane Heatherington.[citation needed]

John married Catherine Margaret Teter.[citation needed]

He died on 29 April 1840 in Lewis County, Virginia, United States.[citation needed]

"Rev. John Mitchell, a soldier in the American Revolution, who came to America from Dawston, Lancashire Co., England in 1774 at the age of 11, bound to a sailor. He ran away from the ship when they made port in Yorktown, VA. and eventually made his way up to Hampshire Co., VA. where he was drafted into the Virginia militia at age 17. He was wounded in the shoulder and discharged, but re-enlisted and was present when Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. After the war he became a minister and preached the gospel for 40 years, first in the Methodist-Episcopal church and later with the Protestant Methodist. He moved to Harrison, Co., VA. (now Lewis Co., West Virginia) in 1803 where he lived the rest of his life. He built the Harmony Methodist Church :https://www.wvnews.com/westondemocrat/news/harmony-church-in-jane-lew-celebrates-200-years/article_2498c227-aad3-5353-a28a-3a54b14c5088.htmlon his farm and there is still a church today. :https://wvhistoryonview.org/catalog/050995. He was the first school teacher in that area. He divided his time between preaching, teaching, farming and fighting Indians. He married Catherine Margaret Teter in 1783." " Rev. John Mitchell died 29 Apr 1840 and is buried in the family cemetery on his farm." (Excerpted from a Biography compiled by Connie Ball Paris, Texas)

Research notes

  • I could find no baptism for John in 1763 on FamilySearch. If Thomas and Jane were his parents, they married in Cumberland – a different county. Is "Dawston" meant to be Dalston, Cumberland?

There is a different profile for the John Mitchell who married Obedience Vaughan.

Comments on Ancestry from Daniel Mitchel say that this John Mitchell left no will: "This will is for a different John Mitchell. The Rev. John Mitchel, J.P. died in Jane Lew, Lewis County, (West) Virginia in 1840. He left no will." Fuller-8857 10:10, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
