He was a Crimean War veteran.

He was survived by daughters Mesdames E. Daley (Taylor's Arm), R. Sillitoe (Hickey's Creek) W. Hinchcliffe (West Kempsey), W. Cumming (East Kempsey), S. James (China); and the sons are Messrs. William Alexander Mitchell (Wahroonga), Harry Mitchell (Newcastle), Robert J. Mitchell (Cooranbong), Francis Mitchell (Cooranbong), George Mitchell (Kyogle), and Arthur Mitchell (Hickey's Creek).
