Note
Cousin Dick [Richard E.] Nichol reports that Dr. Sherrill "Sherd" Mitchell funded Walter Scott Nichol's medical schooling, himself having been a Union surgeon durning the Civil War. In fact, Sherrill Lewis Mitchel SENIOR was a private in the Civil War, and his son Sherrill Lewis "Sherd" Mitchell, Jr. was the doctor. The story as told to me by Byron A. Nichol was that "a Mitchell uncle" helped Byron's father through medical college; that would have been Ruah Mitchell's brother, Sherrill, Sr. --Robert B. Nichol, 2007
