Walter was born in 1882, son of James MITCHELL and Ellen Jane PENSON.[1]
2748 Pte Walter Thomas MITCHELL enlisted in the AIF on 29 July 1915 at Liverpool NSW. He was an unmarried labourer aged 32 years. His NoK was his sister Christine E. Mitchell who was residing at Ashfield NSW. He was taken on strength into the 45Bn on 31 Mar 1916 and proceeded to France on 2 Jun 1916. He was severely Wounded In Action (GSW to lower left leg) on 6 Aug 1916. He was evacuated to England and in hospital for some time. On 24 Oct 1917, Walter returned to Australia on HT 'Port Lyttleton' arriving in Melbourne on 16 Dec 1917 and was discharged from duty at 2MD Sydney as medically unfit on 23 Jan 1918. Walter was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal for his service in World War 1.
Walter MITCHELL married Elizabeth PARKIN in 1921[2]
They had 3 children: Keith McKenzie (1922- ), Athol Gordon (1924- ), and Francis Noel (1926- ).
He passed away in 1962. [3]
